Our Local KNowledge

COMMON PESTS IN BARELLAN POINT

The name is reported to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning the meeting of the waters, which fits the place exactly, though we could not confirm it in an official place-names register so it is fairer to call it the commonly given account. The locality is literally a point: 3.6 square kilometres of land with the Brisbane River to the east and the Bremer River to the south, at the confluence of the two. Jagera and Yuggera people occupied the area before European settlement.

It also contains two uninhabited islands, Bedwell Island and Finlay Island, each a little over three hectares, with Finlay now effectively joined to the mainland. In 1864 engineer Joseph Brady designed navigational works for both rivers, including a training wall at the south-eastern corner of Barellan Point to stop sandbanks building up. Joseph Brady Park, opened in 1988 at the river confluence with a boat ramp and walking trails, is named for him. During the Second World War the Barellan Point Landing Ground operated as an RAAF airfield, 3,000 feet by 200, with a memorial unveiled by the Governor in June 2015.

What makes this locality distinctive for us is the combination: double river frontage, large treed blocks, seven parks and reserves, and documented major flooding in 1974, 2011 and 2022. The population has barely shifted in fifteen years, sitting at 1,178 in 2006 and 1,173 in 2021, which is unusual in a region where almost everything nearby is growing fast. Settled, ageing, non-expanding, and surrounded on two sides by water.

Termites

TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN BARELLAN POINT

Termites wreck more Australian homes annually than fire, flood and storm damage combined, and there is no insurance to fall back on. The CSIRO national termite survey ranks this region high hazard. Barellan Point is at the demanding end of that: two rivers, repeated documented flooding, treed acreage blocks and housing that has been in place a long time.

On a riverfront acreage property the inspection runs well past the house. We cover the roof void, subfloor, internal walls and full perimeter with a moisture meter and thermal camera, then work out through sheds, garages, tanks, fence lines, stacked timber and the boundary where cleared ground meets the riverbank vegetation. Coptotermes acinaciformis nests around stumps and tree bases and works outward up to 50 metres, and riverbank timber is prime nesting ground.

Repeat flooding is the factor that separates this locality from a dry acreage block elsewhere. Timber that has been wetted and dried across 1974, 2011 and 2022 is softer and considerably more attractive to a colony, subfloor moisture takes far longer to clear than owners expect, and repairs after each event often introduce fresh timber into a structure still holding water. If your property has been through the river coming up, tell us the years and roughly how high. The QBCC recommends property owners in high hazard areas inspect every year without fail.

What you get

What's Included in a Pest Treatment

A lap of the house with a spray wand is not a treatment on a block this size. The job starts inside, covering the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then continues up into the roof space and down into the subfloor where there is one.

Outside we work the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, clearing webbing and wasp nests and placing dust or bait into voids that no spray will penetrate. On a Barellan Point property that takes in sheds, tanks and anything out toward the river, with particular attention to whatever has been under water at some point.

Acreage takes longer than a suburban house and we will give you an honest figure on the day. The certificate is emailed the same afternoon with your reminder set for next time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barellan Point Pest Control FAQs

The things people ask us most before they book.

How much does pest control cost in Barellan Point?

The property drives it, and properties here vary a lot. Ring 1300 545 489, tell us the block size, the buildings on it and whether it has river frontage, and the quote we give is the price you pay, free either way. If the place has flooded before, mention that too, because it genuinely changes the scope.

We're right on the confluence. What should we expect?

More mosquito activity after rain, steady rodent and spider movement along both banks, and a real termite risk wherever mature riverbank timber sits close to the house. Having water on two sides is the defining feature of this locality and it is why people live here, but it does mean permanent rather than seasonal pressure. We concentrate effort on the boundaries nearest the water rather than treating the block as a generic lot.

Our property floods. What does that mean for pests?

Two separate things. Straight after, rodents move into dry buildings and cockroach numbers climb while drains and cavities stay damp, so call-outs spike for a few weeks. The slower issue is termites: repeatedly wetted timber softens and becomes more attractive, subfloor moisture lingers far longer than people think, and repairs frequently introduce new timber into a structure that has not finished drying. Barellan Point has documented major floods in 1974, 2011 and 2022, so an inspection six to twelve months after an event is worth arranging.

How often should I get a termite inspection in Barellan Point?

Twelve months at absolute minimum, and every six to nine months for river-frontage or flood-affected properties. The QBCC’s published minimum is a yearly licensed inspection in high hazard areas and this region carries that rating under CSIRO national termite survey puts this region in its high hazard band. Set up a termite inspection and we will keep the schedule running for you.

Are the islands part of the suburb?

They are. Bedwell Island and Finlay Island both sit within the locality boundary, each a little over three hectares and uninhabited, with Finlay now effectively joined to the mainland. It is a genuinely unusual thing for a residential locality to contain, and it is a reminder of how much of Barellan Point is water and riverbank rather than housing.

How quickly can you get to Barellan Point?

Usually same day or next, Saturdays included. Call 1300 545 489 and say if it is urgent, whether that is a wasp nest near a doorway, rodents in the roof, or damage you have just found in a shed or fence line. After heavy rain we do get a run of rodent call-outs out this way, so mention it if that is what is happening.

What does the 12-month warranty cover?

A full twelve months on every general pest treatment, with free re-treatment of anything named on your certificate that returns in that time. Termite jobs and rodent programs are separately quoted and separately warranted. The complete detail sits in our terms and conditions.
