Our Local KNowledge

COMMON PESTS IN BRASSALL

Brassall holds more people than any other suburb in this part of Ipswich, roughly 12,115 across about 8.2 square kilometres, which makes it the densest of the inner suburbs we service. Nearly one in five dwellings here is a townhouse or semi-detached, so it is not purely a detached-house suburb, and a shared wall changes how cockroaches and rodents move.

Water is the defining feature. Brassall has three separate waterways touching it: Ironpot Creek along the western boundary, two branches of Mihi Creek converging near Ipswich State High School, and the Bremer River along the southern boundary. Both the primary and the high school sit next to Mihi Creek. In 1974 Brassall was among the worst affected suburbs in the city and lost twelve homes on Sydney Street, and in 2011 all three streams behaved exactly as expected.

That water shows up in the mosquito numbers. Ipswich City Council names Clem Street, Brassall as one of only four mosquito breeding hotspots it publicly identifies across the entire city, alongside Raceview, Flinders View and Marburg. Council monitors around 200 sites and runs a dedicated spray vehicle, but the water that ponds after rain in a Brassall backyard is yours to deal with, not council’s.

Termites

TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN BRASSALL

Termites cause more damage to Australian homes each year than fire, flood and storms combined, and standard insurance covers none of it. Ipswich falls inside the high hazard band identified by the CSIRO termite survey. Brassall’s own history is unusual: it was a two-house hamlet known as Hungry Flats in the 1930s and had its own shire from 1860 to 1917, then grew to over twelve thousand people, with heavy residential growth around the Warrego Highway through the 1990s. So the housing here spans a very wide range, and the right inspection approach depends on which decade your street was built in.

The visit runs about 90 minutes. Roof void, subfloor where there is one, internal walls, the full external perimeter, fence lines, retaining walls, stumps and yard timber, with a moisture meter and thermal camera reading behind the linings so nothing gets cut open. On a property backing a creek reserve we spend longer on the boundary and the drainage, because those flood-prone strips along the streams are open space carrying mature timber, and mature timber within 50 metres of a house is where a colony lives.

If termites turn up you get the options with real costs and timeframes attached: chemical barrier, bait and monitoring system, or the two together. There is also genuine industrial history in the ground here, with the Eastwood mine working from 1871 and the Klondyke coke ovens on Parker Lane running into the early 1950s, which means buried timber and old fill on some blocks. We map that rather than assume it.

What you get

What's Included in a Pest Treatment

The ten-minute lap of the outside with a wand is not what happens. Inside comes first: kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then the roof void and the floor cavity. In a townhouse we also treat the roof space above the ceiling line and the wall either side of the party wall, because that is the route between lots.

Outside covers the building perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds. In Brassall there is a fourth thing on the list that most suburbs do not need, and that is standing water. Council names Clem Street as a known breeding hotspot, so we walk the yard for the things that actually hold water after rain: blocked gutters, pot plant bases, bird baths, old tyres, a poorly sealed tank, the low corner that never drains. Then we treat the vegetation and resting harbourage mosquitoes use around the house.

Webbing and wasp nests come down while we are there, and voids no spray reaches get dust or bait. Most homes run 60 to 90 minutes. Certificate by email the same day, reminder before the next service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Brassall Pest Control FAQs

The things people ask us most before they book.

How much does pest control cost in Brassall?

It depends on the property and you will have a fixed price before we book. Brassall’s housing runs from small older places to newer estate homes and townhouses, so the quote moves with the size of the home, whether there is a subfloor, and whether you want a termite inspection alongside the general treatment. Ring 1300 545 489, describe the house and what you are seeing, and you will get the real number on that call at no charge. On value rather than price: CSIRO places this region in a high termite risk zone and termite damage sits outside home insurance. Our 365 Pest Protection Plans spread the cost across the year.

Why are the mosquitoes so bad around here?

Because you have three waterways and council has the data to prove it. Ipswich City Council publicly names Clem Street, Brassall as one of only four mosquito breeding hotspots across the whole city, and Brassall is bounded by Ironpot Creek to the west, two branches of Mihi Creek through the middle and the Bremer River to the south. Council monitors around 200 sites and runs a dedicated spray truck through known trouble spots, but it treats public land, not your backyard. Council also flags Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus and dog heartworm as the local risks. We remove the breeding sites on your property and treat the vegetation mosquitoes rest in around the house.

Can you actually stop mosquitoes, or is it a waste of money?

We can cut the pressure around the house substantially and we will be straight about the ceiling on it. What we cannot do is treat Mihi Creek, Ironpot Creek or the Bremer. What we can do is remove the breeding sites you own, and on most Brassall properties there are more of them than people expect: blocked gutters, pot plant bases, bird baths, old tyres, a wheelbarrow, a poorly sealed rainwater tank, the low corner of the yard that holds water for a week after rain. A mosquito breeding in your own gutter is entirely preventable. Then we treat the shaded vegetation and resting harbourage around the building. Expect a real reduction, not zero, and anyone promising zero next to three creeks is selling you something.

How often should I get a termite inspection in Brassall?

Every twelve months at a minimum. The QBCC recommends a licensed pest controller inspect and report on your property every year, or more often in high hazard areas, and Ipswich is one. Two Brassall-specific reasons to consider six to nine months instead. If you back onto one of the creek reserves, those flood-prone strips are open space carrying mature timber, and a Coptotermes colony forages up to 50 metres from its nest. And if your street predates the 1990s growth around the Warrego Highway, there may be no durable notice in your meter box at all. Book an inspection.

We back onto the creek reserve. What comes across the fence?

More than you would think, because a creek reserve is a permanent wildlife corridor running past your back fence with water, cover and food along the whole length. Practically, that means rodents moving along the banks, huntsman and web-building spiders, wasps nesting in the shed and eaves, and mosquitoes breeding in anything that holds water. On the termite side, the flood-prone land along Mihi and Ironpot Creeks is retained open space with mature trees in it, and mature trees are nest sites. None of that is a reason to be alarmed about living there. It is a reason to inspect on a shorter cycle and to keep the fence line clear rather than stacking timber and clippings against it.

How quickly can you get to Brassall?

Same day or next, Saturdays included. Brassall is a short run from the middle of Ipswich and with twelve thousand people here we are in the suburb most weeks, so it is never a special trip. Ring 1300 545 489 and you get the actual next available appointment rather than a place on a list. Anything urgent gets moved up if you flag it on the call: a wasp nest by the front door, scratching in the roof, or termite damage you have just found. One local note: after heavy rain the mosquito calls spike in this suburb, so book early in the week rather than waiting for the weekend if the creeks have been up.

Fly spray is not touching them. What actually will?

Yes, and with mosquitoes in particular the spray was probably never going to work. A can of surface spray does nothing about the water they are breeding in, which is the actual problem, so you knock down the adults in the room and a fresh batch emerges from the gutter three days later. With cockroaches and ants the failure is different: supermarket sprays are repellents, so they scatter the population instead of killing the colony, and ant baits fail when the bait does not suit the species. Tell us what you used and where. Then we treat the harbourage and the breeding sites rather than the surfaces, which is what the full residential treatment is built around.

Does the warranty cover the mosquitoes?

Twelve months on every general pest treatment. If the pests we treated for come back inside that window we return and re-treat at no cost, no argument. Cover follows what is named on your certificate, which on a standard job means ants, cockroaches, spiders and silverfish. Termite work, rodent baiting and bed bugs are quoted and warranted separately because they run on their own cycles. Mosquitoes are the honest exception here: we do not warrant them and no reputable operator would in a suburb bounded by three waterways, because the breeding habitat sits on public land outside your boundary. We will tell you what we can and cannot promise before you pay. It is all set out in the terms and conditions.
