Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN CHUWAR
Chuwar is the locality that everyone passes through and few people stop in. Colleges Crossing sits inside its boundary, and that crossing is the road link for the Mount Crosby and Karana Downs communities upstream. When it goes under, as it did in 2011 and again completely in 2022, roughly 6,000 residents further up the valley are cut off. The crossing was rebuilt and upgraded for flood resilience in 2013 and still went under in the 2022 event. Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve, with walking trails, lookouts, swimming and fishing, is the other side of that same geography.
Surveyor James Warner named the parish in October 1848. The etymology is uncertain, possibly an Ugarapul name for the district or a corruption of one, so we would not state it as settled. Settlement clustered around the Mount Crosby Road and Junction Road intersection by 1886. The Kholo Bridge over the Brisbane River opened in June 1876 during heavy rain, with the new deck sitting three feet under the river surface at the time; the official party crossed anyway and the christening went ahead. It is a very Queensland story.
There is also a mining legacy here that has been properly dealt with. The Chuwar open-cut coal mine, operated by New Hope Group, worked through the 1980s. Rehabilitation was carried out between 2014 and 2017 with follow-up afterwards, and the Queensland Government certified the site safe, stable, non-polluting and able to support grazing, after which the mining leases and environmental authority were surrendered. That matters for what the land is now rather than what it was, and it is worth knowing the process was completed rather than abandoned.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN CHUWAR
Termite damage costs Australian homeowners more each year than fire, flood and storm damage together, and insurance covers none of it. CSIRO national termite survey classifies the region as high hazard. Chuwar sits between the Brisbane River and the old Tivoli mining district on river flat ground, which means consistent moisture and, on the rural residential blocks, mature timber close to houses.
We inspect the roof void, the subfloor where one exists, internal walls, the complete perimeter, fence lines and yard timber, using a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing needs cutting open. On the larger rural residential blocks we extend outward through sheds, tanks, stacked timber and the boundary treeline, since Coptotermes acinaciformis establishes in stumps and tree bases and forages within a 50 metre radius.
Housing here spans a wide range, from established streets settled since the late 1800s through to much newer builds on subdivided land. Those are genuinely different inspections, and we do not run the same job on both. The QBCC’s standard is one licensed inspection every twelve months where hazard is high, whichever end of that range your property sits at.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
Ten minutes with a wand around the outside is not a proper treatment. Indoors is covered first, kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, before we move up into the roof void and down into the subfloor where one exists.
Externally we cover the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, clear webbing and wasp nests, and place dust or bait into voids a surface spray will not reach. On rural residential blocks we include sheds, tanks and outbuildings, and on the lower river flat ground we give drainage and ground levels a proper look.
A standard home runs 60 to 90 minutes, longer on the larger blocks with outbuildings. The certificate is emailed the same day, formatted for a property file where the home is rented, with the next reminder set.

Frequently Asked Questions
Chuwar Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Chuwar?
It depends whether it is a standard house on an established street or a rural residential block with outbuildings, and those are different jobs. Phone 1300 545 489, describe the property and roughly how much land it sits on, and what we quote is what you pay, free to obtain.
Is Colleges Crossing actually in Chuwar?
It is, which is the thing most people do not realise. The crossing sits inside Chuwar’s boundary, and it is the road access for the Mount Crosby and Karana Downs communities upstream. When it goes under, around 6,000 people further up the valley are isolated, as happened for three days in the 2022 event. It was rebuilt for flood resilience in 2013 and still went completely under in 2022. Worth knowing if you are planning anything during a wet stretch.
The old coal mine here, is it a problem?
Not as far as the official record goes. The Chuwar open-cut mine operated through the 1980s, rehabilitation was carried out between 2014 and 2017 with follow-up afterwards, and the Queensland Government certified the site safe, stable, non-polluting and able to support grazing, after which New Hope surrendered the leases and environmental authority. That is a completed process rather than an abandoned one. We are pest controllers rather than geotechnical engineers, so anything about ground conditions on a specific block is a question for Ipswich City Council’s planning overlays.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Chuwar?
Every twelve months, and more often on rural residential blocks with mature timber or close to the river. The QBCC expects an annual report from a licensed controller in high hazard areas and CSIRO’s survey of national termite hazard places this region at the high end. Book in a termite inspection and we will prompt you when the next one is due.
We're on river flat ground. Does that change things?
It raises the moisture in the soil around your house, which is the single biggest factor in whether a subterranean colony finds a property worth approaching. It also means more mosquito pressure after rain and more rodent movement along the river corridor. None of that is unusual for river flat land, it just means the inspection pays attention to drainage, ground levels and the boundary nearest the water rather than treating the block generically.
How quickly can you get to Chuwar?
Typically same day or next, weekends included, and being on the main route into the valley makes it easy to reach. Ring 1300 545 489 and flag anything urgent. If Colleges Crossing is closed we will tell you honestly and reschedule as soon as it reopens rather than leaving you waiting.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
Twelve months on every general pest treatment, with free re-treatment of any listed pest that reappears during that period. Termite work and rodent programs run on independent quotes and warranties. Our terms and conditions spell the whole thing out.
