Realistically, no. House building in Karalee started in the early 1970s and the western subdivisions went in through the 1980s, so the original cohort is now fifty years old or more. Chemical soil barriers have a working life measured in years rather than decades, and the long-lived organochlorine treatments used up to the mid 1990s were withdrawn. Homes of this vintage also predate the durable notice regime, so there is often nothing in the meter box to tell you what was ever installed. The QBCC recommends a licensed pest controller inspect and report on your property every year, or more often in high hazard areas, and Karalee stacks up three reasons for the shorter interval: housing that is forty to fifty years old with no effective barrier, blocks of 2,000 square metres or more carrying mature trees, and outbuildings sitting on bare ground. Coptotermes acinaciformis occurs throughout Queensland and nests in tree bases and stumps. Count the mature gums within 50 metres of your house and you have counted the nest sites.

It does, and it is the single biggest ongoing pressure here. The Brisbane River runs along the north and north-east and the Bremer along the south, which gives rodents a permanent corridor with water, cover and food on both sides of the suburb. The population outside your fence is never going to zero, so baiting alone will not fix it. What changes the result is proofing: sealing entry points on the house and shed, covering grates and weep holes, cutting vegetation back off the roofline, and getting feed and seed into sealed bins. House only means house only, so if the shed was left off the job the shed is not covered.
