Karana Downs is a genuinely invented place. It did not grow out of an older settlement, it was carved out of parts of Kholo, Lake Manchester and Mount Crosby in the 1970s and given a developer-chosen name. Karana is commonly glossed as an Aboriginal word meaning quiet place, though that etymology is suggested rather than firmly established, so it is best treated as the usual account rather than settled fact. The estate was planned around a golf course from the start, now the Brisbane River Golf Club on College Road, an eighteen-hole course opened in 1979 and formerly known as the Karana Downs Country Club.

The geography is the thing that shapes our work. The suburb covers 7.5 square kilometres bounded by the Brisbane River on the south and east, with Mount Crosby Road to the north and north-west. Effectively it is a river peninsula with one main road spine, at a population density of around 507 people per square kilometre, which is very low by Brisbane standards. That means large bushland blocks, retained vegetation, mature trees close to houses, and a permanent interface between cleared ground and bush.

The road access is worth knowing about because it is not theoretical. In the February and March 2022 flood, Mount Crosby Road at Colleges Crossing became impassable and roughly 6,000 residents across Mount Crosby, Karana Downs, Kholo and Lake Manchester were cut off for three days, with supplies flown in by helicopter. Kookaburra Park, the main riverside reserve here, was virtually destroyed in the January 2011 flood and reopened with reduced facilities. One more thing worth correcting: Mount Crosby State School is physically in Karana Downs, not in Mount Crosby.
