Our Local KNowledge

COMMON PESTS IN MOUNT CROSBY

Most people in Brisbane and Ipswich have drunk water from here without knowing it. The Mount Crosby pumping station and weir opened in 1892 under the Brisbane Board of Waterworks and began supplying Brisbane in 1893, with a village of around sixty cottages built for the workers. Premier Ned Hanlon opened the first section of the East Bank Water Treatment Plant in May 1948. Today Seqwater states the East Bank plant supplies roughly half of South East Queensland’s drinking water, serving about 1.6 million people across Brisbane, Ipswich and Logan. The pumping station complex on Stumers Road went onto the Queensland Heritage Register in October 2019.

The history is full of good detail. A seven kilometre tramway from Tivoli railway station, completed in 1913, carried Ipswich coalfield coal to fire the boilers, with an aerial ropeway added in 1915. A 31.6 metre brick chimney stood until 1958. A fish ladder was built in 1941 to help native mullet migrate past the weir. John Oxley reached the area in September 1824 and named the mountain Belle Vue Mountain; the present name has two competing explanations and neither is settled. Colleges Crossing takes its name from farmer George College, who arrived in 1849.

For our purposes the locality is 15.3 square kilometres with the Brisbane River on the south and south-west, and Mount Crosby itself rising to 183 metres. That is river valley country with substantial retained bushland and very large lots. Access is the practical constraint, as the 2022 flood demonstrated when Colleges Crossing went under and this community, along with Karana Downs, Kholo and Lake Manchester, was isolated for three days. And a point worth clearing up: Mount Crosby has no school. Mount Crosby State School is in neighbouring Karana Downs.

Termites

TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN MOUNT CROSBY

Each year termites do more damage to Australian homes than fire, flood and storms combined, and no policy covers it. CSIRO’s national termite survey rates this part of Queensland high hazard, and Mount Crosby combines nearly every factor that pushes a property to the top of that range: river frontage, extensive retained bushland, mature timber and very large lots.

The inspection has to cover far more than the house. We work the roof void, subfloor, internal walls and full perimeter with a moisture meter and thermal camera, then go outward through sheds, garages, tanks, fence lines, stacked timber and the boundary where cleared ground meets bush. Coptotermes acinaciformis nests in stumps and tree bases and forages up to 50 metres, which on a block measured in hectares covers a great deal of ground.

There is also older building stock here that most localities do not have. The waterworks cottages built for plant workers from the 1890s onward, several of which are on the Brisbane Heritage Register, are timber buildings well over a century old. If you own or rent one, tell us on the call. Inspection on a building like that has to be non-destructive and any recommendation needs to account for original fabric. The QBCC recommends a licensed inspection every twelve months in areas rated high hazard.

What you get

What's Included in a Pest Treatment

Walking around the house with a spray wand for ten minutes does not count as a treatment on a property this size. We start inside, through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then continue up into the roof space and down into the subfloor where one exists.

Outside covers the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, with webbing and wasp nests taken down and dust or bait pushed into voids a surface spray cannot reach. On acreage that extends to sheds, tanks, pump housings and the treeline, and on the older cottages we look hard at stumps and anything stored underneath.

Acreage takes longer than a standard house and we will be upfront about that on the day instead of rushing it. The certificate goes out by email the same afternoon with the next reminder already set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mount Crosby Pest Control FAQs

The things people ask us most before they book.

How much does pest control cost in Mount Crosby?

Block size and the number of structures drive it here rather than floor area. Call 1300 545 489, tell us how much land there is and what is on it, and the quote we give you is the price you pay. Quoting is free. If it is one of the older waterworks cottages, say so, because that changes how we approach the inspection.

Is there really no school in Mount Crosby?

Correct, and it surprises people because Mount Crosby State School exists. It is in neighbouring Karana Downs. The same sort of boundary quirk applies to a few things out this way, which is why we work from street addresses rather than suburb names when we plan a run. If you are unsure which locality your property is actually in, give us the address and we will confirm it.

Does the water treatment plant affect pests nearby?

Not in any way you would notice at home. It is a treatment and pumping facility rather than a waste operation, so it does not generate the kind of attractant that, say, a processing plant or a waste transfer station does. What does affect your property is the surrounding landscape: river frontage, retained bushland and mature timber. That is where the pressure comes from, not the infrastructure.

How often should I get a termite inspection in Mount Crosby?

Twelve months as the floor, and every six to nine months for heavily treed or river-facing blocks. The QBCC puts the minimum at one inspection a year in high hazard areas and CSIRO national termite survey identifies this region as high hazard. Book a termite inspection and the next one gets flagged automatically.

What happens if Colleges Crossing is closed?

We reschedule and tell you straight away rather than leaving you waiting. In the 2022 flood the crossing was impassable and this community was cut off for three days with supplies flown in. It is a normal part of living out here and we plan around it rather than pretending it does not happen. If you are booking during a wet stretch, worth mentioning so we can pick a sensible day.

We own one of the old waterworks cottages. Can you treat it?

Yes, and we would want to know in advance. Those are timber buildings well over a century old, several on the Brisbane Heritage Register, and inspection needs to be non-destructive, which is what a moisture meter and thermal camera are for. Recommendations account for original fabric rather than defaulting to what you would do on a modern house. The upside is that an old timber building with an accessible subfloor is considerably easier to read than a modern slab.

What does the 12-month warranty cover?

Every general pest treatment carries a full year, and anything named on your certificate that reappears within that time is re-treated at no cost. Termite treatment and rodent baiting sit on their own quote and their own warranty. Refer to our terms and conditions for everything in full.
