Our Local KNowledge

COMMON PESTS IN ALGESTER

Algester has one of the better naming stories in Brisbane. The suburb was detached from Acacia Ridge and officially named in 1972, taking the name from Algester Road. That road name is a corruption of Alcester Road, named in the 1920s by subdivider F. S. Brecknell after the main street of Moseley, his home village near Birmingham. So a Brisbane suburb ended up named after a misspelling of an English street name. Leighton Properties had originally planned the estate in 1968 as Ridgewood Heights, but the Place Names Board substituted Algester instead.

What Leighton built is still legible in the streetscape. Heavy development began in the mid-1970s under an all-brick covenant, producing four-bedroom lowset homes with rumpus rooms and double garages in colonial, Cape Cod and Mediterranean styles, with underground power and palm-lined road medians. Before that, Algester Road and Dalmeny Street were unsealed and the only way in, and everything else was bushland. It is a designed suburb rather than one that grew, and that shows in how consistent the housing stock is.

The thing most sources get wrong is water. Algester is often described as having no creeks or reserves, which is not right. Sheep Station Gully at 240 Nottingham Road is a paved and boardwalked walk through remnant forest, with creek beds, remnant billabongs, lily-covered water bodies, sandy creek beds, paperbark trees and bird hides beside a lake. It drains north into Oxley Creek. Standing water and melaleuca wetland inside a suburb is directly relevant to mosquito numbers after rain, and consistent ground moisture is exactly what a subterranean termite colony is looking for.

Termites

TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN ALGESTER

Each year termites cause more damage to Australian homes than fire, flood and storm combined, and no policy covers the repair bill. CSIRO national termite survey lists this region as high hazard. The relevant point in Algester is age: this suburb was built out from the mid-1970s, which means the original housing stock is now around half a century old and anything installed against termites at construction has long since stopped doing its job.

We work through the roof void, subfloor where one exists, internal walls, the complete perimeter, fence lines and any timber in the yard, using a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing needs cutting open. On properties near Sheep Station Gully we extend the boundary check, since the gully carries permanent moisture and mature paperbarks, and Coptotermes acinaciformis will forage up to 50 metres from a nest in a tree base or stump.

The all-brick covenant is worth a word, because it gives people false confidence. Brick veneer over a timber frame is still a timber-framed house, and the brick skin conceals activity rather than preventing it. Some of the hardest jobs we see are in well-kept brick homes where nothing was visible until the damage was significant. The QBCC sets annual inspection as the minimum standard for high hazard areas, and a fifty-year-old brick home is no exception.

What you get

What's Included in a Pest Treatment

We do not spray the outside for ten minutes and call it done. The work starts indoors, covering the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, before moving up into the roof void and down into the subfloor where there is one.

Externally we treat the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, clear webbing and wasp nests, and push dust or bait into the voids a surface spray cannot get to. Where a property sits near the gully or its linear park we spend extra time on that side, since permanent water is a permanent source of activity rather than a seasonal one.

A standard Algester home takes 60 to 90 minutes. The certificate comes by email the same day, formatted for a property file where the home is rented, with the next reminder already set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Algester Pest Control FAQs

The things people ask us most before they book.

How much does pest control cost in Algester?

The house size and what we find on the day set it, so we quote after looking rather than guessing on the phone. Ring 1300 545 489, describe the property, and what we quote is what you pay. The quote itself is free. Given most of this suburb is now around fifty years old, it is worth asking about a termite inspection on the same call.

Does Algester actually have a creek or wetland?

It does, despite what several sources say. Sheep Station Gully runs through the suburb with an entrance at 240 Nottingham Road, and it holds remnant billabongs, lily-covered water bodies, sandy creek beds and stands of paperbark, with bird hides beside the lake. It drains north into Oxley Creek. For residents nearby it explains a lot about mosquito numbers after heavy rain and why moisture-related pest pressure is higher on that side of the suburb.

My house is brick. Are termites still a risk?

Yes, and this comes up constantly here because of the estate’s all-brick covenant. Almost all of these homes are brick veneer, meaning a brick outer skin over a timber frame. The frame is still timber and still vulnerable. What the brick actually does is hide the evidence, so problems are often further along by the time anything becomes visible from inside. It is a reason to inspect regularly, not a reason to relax.

How often should I get a termite inspection in Algester?

Every twelve months, and consider tightening that if you are near the gully. The QBCC’s guidance is a yearly inspection at minimum where the hazard rating is high and this region carries that rating under CSIRO’s national termite survey grades this region high hazard. Book a termite inspection and we will hold the reminder.

Do you treat general pests as well as termites?

Yes, and general pest work is the more common call in an established suburb of this size. One standard treatment covers ants, cockroaches, spiders, silverfish and wasps inside and out, while termites are handled as a separate inspection with their own quote and warranty. Our residential pest control page sets out what a standard visit includes.

How quickly can you get to Algester?

Usually same day or next, and we work Saturdays. Phone 1300 545 489 and say if it is urgent, whether that is a wasp nest near a door, something moving in the roof, or damage you have just found, and we will move you up the run.

What does the 12-month warranty cover?

General pest treatments carry twelve months of cover, so any pest named on your certificate that returns during the year gets re-treated at no charge. Termite treatment and rodent baiting operate under a separate quote and warranty. Our terms and conditions carry the full detail.
