Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN BETHANIA
Bethania is named from the German Bethanien, after the biblical village of Bethany. German families arrived from 1864 aboard the Susanne Godeffroy, settling an extension of the Logan Agricultural Reserve organised by immigration agent John Heussler, and the locality was long known as German Pocket. They farmed maize and sugar on strip holdings before moving into dairying, and put up a Lutheran church, a school, a cemetery in 1866, a blacksmith and a wheelwright in short order.
That church is still standing and still in use. Bethania Lutheran Church on Church Road was built in 1872, the congregation’s second, and it is the oldest Lutheran church in Queensland, on the Queensland Heritage Register since 1992. The listing includes the graveyard, where graves date from 1866. The South Coast railway reached Bethania Junction by 1885 carrying dairy produce to Brisbane, the Beaudesert line closed in 1996, and the Beenleigh line still serves the suburb today. Residential subdivision only began in 1949 and ran through to the 1980s.
Two things shape the pest work here. The first is the river: Bethania fronts the Logan and has a long documented flood record, from the 1887 flood that inundated all of German Pocket, through 1974, to the February and March 2022 event, after which Logan City Council released updated flood mapping that increased the assessed risk for some properties. The second is the concentration of retirement and over-50s villages, including Jeta Gardens, the BlueCare village, Ingenia Lifestyle and River Glen. Village living means clustered attached dwellings, shared roof spaces and residents who often cannot get up a ladder or under a house to check anything themselves.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN BETHANIA
Termite damage costs Australian homeowners more each year than fire, flood and storm damage together, and no policy covers it. This region is rated high hazard by the CSIRO’s survey of national termite hazard places this region at the high end. On the Logan River with a repeated flood history behind it, Bethania carries persistent subfloor and ground moisture, and that moisture is what makes a property attractive to a colony in the first place.
The inspection takes in the roof void, subfloor where one exists, internal walls, the entire perimeter, fence lines and yard timber, using a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing has to be opened up. In a villa or townhouse we also assess the shared roof space and party walls, because attached dwellings share more than a wall and a colony in one unit is a problem for the whole row. Coptotermes acinaciformis forages up to 50 metres from its nest, which easily spans a village block.
We are also mindful of who we are talking to. In a suburb with this many older residents living alone, explaining what we found and what it actually means matters as much as the inspection itself, and we will put it in writing plainly rather than handing over a technical report and leaving. The QBCC puts the minimum at one inspection a year in high hazard areas.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
A quick spray around the outside is not a treatment, whoever offered it. Indoors comes first, the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then up into the roof cavity and down into the subfloor where one exists.
Outside covers the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, with webbing and wasp nests cleared and dust or bait placed into voids that spraying cannot reach. In a village setting we coordinate with the manager so several units can be done together, which is both cheaper for residents and considerably more effective than treating one villa in a row of eight.
Most homes take 60 to 90 minutes. The certificate is emailed the same day, and if it is easier we will leave a printed copy as well. We set your reminder for next time so nobody has to keep track of it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Bethania Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Bethania?
It depends whether it is a house, a villa or a unit in a village, and what we find when we look. Ring 1300 545 489, describe the place, and what we quote is what you pay. The quote is free. If you are in a retirement village, say so, because we can often arrange several units together and that works out better for everyone.
Do you work with the retirement villages here?
Yes, regularly, given how many there are in Bethania. We can deal directly with the village or facility manager for common areas and coordinate individual villas on the same visit. For residents that usually means less disruption and a single scheduled day rather than contractors turning up at random. If you live in a village and are not sure whether pest control is your responsibility or the operator’s, ask us and we will help you find out.
Our home has flooded before. Does that raise our pest risk?
Yes, and Bethania has a long enough flood record for this to be a real question rather than a hypothetical. In the weeks after a flood, rodents move into dry buildings and cockroach activity rises while drains and cavities stay damp. Over the longer term the termite risk is what matters, because timber that has been wet and dried repeatedly is softer and more appealing to a colony, and subfloor moisture lingers far longer than most people expect. If your property was affected in 2022 or earlier, tell us when you book.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Bethania?
Once a year at minimum, and worth tightening for lower-lying properties closer to the river. The QBCC’s recommendation is annual inspection and reporting wherever the hazard rating is high, and CSIRO national termite survey marks this region high hazard. Book a termite inspection and we will hold the reminder so it does not get forgotten.
Is Bethania Lutheran Church really the oldest in Queensland?
The oldest Lutheran church in the state, yes. It was built in 1872 and has been on the Queensland Heritage Register since 1992, with the graveyard alongside it holding graves from 1866. It is a reminder that Bethania is a genuine 1860s settlement rather than a post-war subdivision, which surprises people who only know the newer parts of the suburb.
How quickly can you get to Bethania?
Usually same day or next, Saturdays included. Call 1300 545 489 and let us know if it is urgent. If you are elderly or have mobility difficulties and something is causing you real trouble, say that on the call too, and we will do what we can to get to you sooner.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
Every general pest treatment carries a full twelve months, and any pest named on your certificate that returns inside that time is re-treated at no charge. Termite work and rodent programs run on independent quotes and warranties. You will find the full wording in our terms and conditions.
