Our Local KNowledge

COMMON PESTS IN BLACKSOIL

Blacksoil is famous for a road. The Blacksoil Interchange grade-separated the Warrego Highway and the Brisbane Valley Highway, carrying the Brisbane Valley Highway and Wulkuraka Connection Road over the Warrego, with signals, lighting and a shared pedestrian and cycle path. It cost 93.4 million dollars, split between the Australian and Queensland governments, with construction beginning in April 2013. That is an enormous piece of infrastructure serving a resident population of 106 people in 32 homes, and it explains why the name is instantly familiar to drivers and completely unfamiliar as a suburb.

The name itself is straightforward: it comes from the district’s black soil and is documented in use from the 1860s. The locality was recognised in 1978 and formally bounded in 2000. It covers only 1.8 square kilometres, sits about eleven kilometres north-west of the Ipswich CBD, and has Ironpot Creek running through it. Land use is rural residential in the north with grazing on native vegetation in the south, and Ironpot Creek Reserve provides a play area, barbecues and picnic facilities. There are no schools at all.

One thing we want to be straight about. Because the population is so small, the Australian Bureau of Statistics does not publish dwelling structure or tenure data for Blacksoil at all, carrying a notice that limited information has been provided due to the small population. Plenty of pest control pages would quote a figure from a commercial property portal and present it as census data. We are not going to do that. What we can tell you from the published figures is the population, the dwelling count, the median age of 56 and the median household income, and the rest we simply do not have.

Termites

TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN BLACKSOIL

Termites wreck more Australian homes each year than fire, flood and storms put together, and the cost sits entirely outside insurance. The CSIRO’s survey of national termite hazard places this region at the high end. On rural residential land with native vegetation and grazing country alongside, there is no shortage of nesting habitat within reach of a house.

Our inspection runs through the roof void, subfloor, internal walls and full perimeter with a moisture meter and thermal camera, then out through sheds, tanks, yards, fence lines, stacked timber and the boundary where cleared ground meets native vegetation. Coptotermes acinaciformis nests below stumps and tree bases and covers up to 50 metres foraging, and on grazing country with retained trees that radius covers a great deal.

Timber fence posts deserve a specific mention on grazing land. They sit in ground for decades, nobody inspects them, and they are one of the most reliable places we find activity on a rural block. Finding a colony in a fence line well before it reaches the house is a good outcome. On flooding, Ipswich City Council’s flood study list does not include Ironpot Creek, so we cannot cite a modelled extent for Blacksoil’s own creek and we are not going to guess at one. The QBCC puts the minimum at one inspection a year in high hazard areas.

What you get

What's Included in a Pest Treatment

A fast pass around the house with a spray wand does not cover a rural property. We start indoors, working the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then move up into the roof space and down into the subfloor where one exists.

Outdoors covers the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, with webbing and wasp nests taken down and dust or bait pushed into voids a spray cannot reach. On a Blacksoil property that extends to sheds, tanks, yards and the boundary treeline, and we look closely at timber fence posts and any old structures standing in paddocks.

Rural blocks take longer than a suburban house and we will be honest about that on the day. The certificate is emailed the same afternoon with the next reminder set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blacksoil Pest Control FAQs

The things people ask us most before they book.

How much does pest control cost in Blacksoil?

Rural properties are quoted individually rather than off a rate card. Ring 1300 545 489, tell us the block size, the buildings on it and whether there is grazing land involved, and what we quote is what you pay, free either way.

Is Blacksoil actually a suburb?

It is, though almost everyone knows it only as a road junction. The Blacksoil Interchange is the reason: a 93.4 million dollar grade separation of the Warrego and Brisbane Valley Highways, which puts the name into traffic reports across the region. Behind it sits a locality of 1.8 square kilometres with 106 residents and 32 homes, rural residential in the north and grazing in the south. It is a real place with people living in it, just a very small one.

Why can't you tell me the housing statistics for Blacksoil?

Because the Bureau of Statistics does not publish them. The census page for Blacksoil carries a notice that limited information has been provided due to the small population, so dwelling structure and tenure figures are simply not available. We could pull numbers from a commercial property website and present them as census data, and plenty of pages do exactly that, but they would not be census figures and we would rather tell you what we actually know.

How often should I get a termite inspection in Blacksoil?

Every twelve months at minimum, and more often on a treed block or one with substantial old timber infrastructure. The QBCC’s recommendation is annual inspection and reporting wherever the hazard rating is high and CSIRO national termite survey marks this region high hazard. Organise a termite inspection and we will carry the reminder forward each year.

Does Blacksoil flood?

Ironpot Creek runs through the locality, but Ipswich City Council’s published flood study list does not include an Ironpot Creek study, so there is no modelled extent we can point you to and we are not going to invent one. If it matters for a specific block, council is the right place to ask. What we can speak to is what creek proximity means for moisture and pest pressure around your buildings.

Do you check fence posts and paddock structures?

Yes, and on grazing land they earn the attention. Timber fence posts sit in ground for decades with nobody looking at them, and they are one of the most reliable places we find termite activity on a rural block. Old yard rails, disused sheds and the remains of previous structures are the same. Catching a colony in a fence line before it works toward the house is exactly what a rural inspection is for.

What does the 12-month warranty cover?

Twelve months on every general pest treatment, and anything named on your certificate that returns in that period is re-treated at no cost. Termite treatment and rodent baiting each carry their own quote and warranty terms. You will find the full wording in our terms and conditions.
