Our Local KNowledge

COMMON PESTS IN BLACKSTONE

First, a correction that surprises nearly everyone. Blackstone is not named after coal. The suburb was originally called Bundamba Creek and was renamed on the suggestion of postmistress Mrs Margaret Orr after Blackstone, believed to be a place in Ireland. The black stone reading is entirely reasonable and entirely wrong, which is a nice thing to know about the place you live in.

The coal is real enough though. Seams were found south of Blackstone in 1866, a year after the Ipswich to Grandchester railway opened, and the Welshman Lewis Thomas opened his first Aberdare mine here in 1876 and went on to become the West Moreton coal king. By 1900 more than three-quarters of Ipswich’s coal came from the Bundamba field. In 1883 a party of Welsh people formerly employed in slate mining arrived to work for Thomas, worshipped first under a mulberry tree, and in 1886 opened the United Welsh Church on Thomas Street, which remains the only Welsh church in Queensland and has been on the Queensland Heritage Register since 1992. The first eisteddfod was held on New Year’s Day 1887, and the Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir, formed in 1886, describes itself as Queensland’s longest continuously performing choir.

The most striking piece of local history for anyone thinking about buildings is Brynhyfryd, Lewis Thomas’s 49-room mansion on Blackstone Hill, with Welsh slate floors, imported marble fireplaces and electric light. It was demolished in 1937 after mine workings beneath it left the building unstable. The site is now Castle Hill Blackstone Reserve, with mountain bike trails and the mansion’s exposed footings still visible. To be clear, that is a documented historical event rather than a statement about present-day ground conditions anywhere in the suburb. What it does tell you is that this is old, worked, layered ground, and old ground behaves differently from a new estate.

Termites

TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN BLACKSTONE

Australian homeowners lose more each year to termite damage than to fire, flood and storm damage combined, with no insurer behind it. CSIRO’s survey of national termite hazard places this region at the high end. Blackstone’s housing spans a long period, from late nineteenth century cottages near the Welsh church through to much newer stock, and that spread means a single standard approach to inspection would miss things.

On an older timber cottage the subfloor is where the job is genuinely done, so we spend real time under the house on stumps, bearers, joists and ant caps, along with the roof void, internal walls, the full perimeter and yard timber, all read with a moisture meter and thermal camera. Coptotermes acinaciformis nests around stumps and tree bases and works outward up to 50 metres, and a block that has been occupied since the 1880s usually has an old stump buried in it somewhere.

Blackstone also sits close to genuine bushland at Castle Hill Blackstone Reserve, with roughly sixteen kilometres of mountain bike trails through it. A reserve of that size on the doorstep means mature timber and permanent habitat within easy foraging distance of nearby houses, which is worth factoring into how often you inspect. The QBCC puts the minimum at one inspection a year in high hazard areas.

What you get

What's Included in a Pest Treatment

Ten minutes around the outside with a wand is not a treatment and we will not describe it as one. The work starts indoors, covering the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then continues up into the roof cavity and down into the subfloor where one exists.

Externally we cover the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, clear webbing and wasp nests, and push dust or bait into voids that spraying alone will miss. On the older cottages we also treat stumps and the ground beneath, since on that style of home it is generally where activity begins rather than where it ends up.

A typical visit runs 60 to 90 minutes, longer where the subfloor is extensive or awkward. We email the certificate the same day and set your next reminder before leaving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blackstone Pest Control FAQs

The things people ask us most before they book.

How much does pest control cost in Blackstone?

House size and age set it, and an older cottage with a full subfloor takes longer than a newer slab home. Phone 1300 545 489, tell us roughly what sort of house it is, and what we quote is what you pay, at no cost to obtain. Given the age of some of the housing here it is worth asking about a termite inspection on the same call.

Is Blackstone named after coal?

No, though almost everyone assumes so. The suburb was originally Bundamba Creek and was renamed after Blackstone, believed to be a place in Ireland, on the suggestion of the local postmistress. The coal connection is genuine in every other respect, since this was the heart of the West Moreton coalfield, but the name itself came from somewhere else entirely. Neighbouring Coalfalls, by contrast, really is named after coal seams visible in the river bank.

Is there old mine working under Blackstone?

This district was heavily mined and one documented building, the Brynhyfryd mansion on Blackstone Hill, was demolished in 1937 after workings beneath it left it unstable. That is a historical fact about one specific site. We are not in a position to tell you anything about ground conditions under your particular property, and we would not try. The only Ipswich locality formally documented by the Queensland Government as a subsidence area is Collingwood Park. If it matters for your block, Ipswich City Council’s planning overlays are the place to look.

How often should I get a termite inspection in Blackstone?

Annually, and more often if you are close to the Castle Hill reserve or the house is one of the older timber cottages. The QBCC’s recommendation is annual inspection and reporting wherever the hazard rating is high and CSIRO national termite survey marks this region high hazard. Arrange a termite inspection and the reminder stays on our system, not yours.

We back onto the Castle Hill reserve. What should we expect?

More of what lives in bushland, arriving along your rear boundary. Spiders working the fence line, rodents treating the reserve as permanent habitat rather than passing through, wasp activity, and mature timber and stumps sitting well inside termite foraging range. That is a fair trade for having sixteen kilometres of trails at the end of the street. The practical response is keeping the boundary clear of stacked timber and clippings and inspecting on a shorter cycle.

How quickly can you get to Blackstone?

Typically same day or next, and we work Saturdays. Call 1300 545 489 and tell us if something needs dealing with now, whether that is a wasp nest at a doorway, noise in the roof, or damage you have just found under the house.

What does the 12-month warranty cover?

A full twelve months on every general pest treatment, with free re-treatment of anything listed on your certificate that reappears in that time. Termite treatment and rodent baiting sit on their own quote and their own warranty. You will find the full wording in our terms and conditions.
