Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN CANNON HILL
The single most important fact about Cannon Hill, for our purposes, is what used to be here. The Swift Company meatworks opened in 1913 with 300 workers. In 1931 the livestock saleyards moved down from Newmarket, and the government turned the site into the Metropolitan Public Abattoir Board facility, a complex running roughly two kilometres that handled stock from most of Queensland, the Northern Territory and South Australia. The saleyards closed in 1991 after sixty years of operation, beaten by inland facilities closer to the cattle.
That land did not disappear. It became big-box retail, a commercial precinct and, in 2018, the Cannon Hills Community Links golf course. What it left behind is a suburb with a lot of large-format commercial buildings, a lot of made ground, and a service and loading environment that rodents find congenial. It is genuinely different work from treating a quiet residential street two suburbs over.
The name itself is probably from Cannon Hill House, built in 1867 on Wynnum Road and occupied by the Weedon family until it burned down in 1926, with Thornhill Weedon said to have named it for two fallen trees that looked like a cannon. The street names picked up the theme and never let go: Shrapnel, Gatling and Grenade Roads are all here. The Cleveland railway came through in 1889, the station is locally heritage listed and was the first in Queensland to use boom gates, and the suburb still shares the Minnippi Parklands and their Bulimba Creek lagoons with Carina and Tingalpa.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN CANNON HILL
More homes in Australia are damaged by termites each year than by fire, flood and storm combined, and insurance does not touch it. This region sits in the high hazard band of the CSIRO’s national termite survey rates the region high hazard. Cannon Hill adds its own wrinkle, because a lot of the suburb is built on redeveloped industrial land where fill has been brought in and levels changed, and altered ground is harder to read than an undisturbed block.
A residential inspection covers the roof void, subfloor where present, internal walls, the entire external perimeter, fence lines and yard timber, read with a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing needs opening up. Coptotermes acinaciformis, the species responsible for most structural damage in South East Queensland, will forage up to 50 metres from a nest, which is why a single mature tree two properties away can matter.
For commercial premises on the old abattoir and saleyards footprint we offer termite risk assessment as part of a wider pest management contract, which is a real consideration for anyone responsible for structural timber, stock storage or lease obligations in a large-format building. The QBCC’s published minimum is a yearly licensed inspection in high hazard areas applies to commercial property just as much as residential.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
We do not turn up, spray the outside walls for a few minutes and call that a service. Inside comes first, the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then up into the roof void and down into the subfloor where there is one.
The external pass covers eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, the perimeter, fence lines and garden beds, with wasp nests and webbing knocked down and dust or bait pushed into voids that spraying alone cannot reach. For commercial sites we map and number rodent stations, work outside trading hours where that protects the business, and hand over documentation that stands up to a food safety or lease audit.
Most residential jobs are done inside 60 to 90 minutes. Commercial premises depend entirely on the site. Either way the certificate goes out by email the same day, with a reminder set or a recurring schedule locked in.

Frequently Asked Questions
Cannon Hill Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Cannon Hill?
It varies with the property type, and Cannon Hill has all of them, houses, apartments and large commercial tenancies. Call 1300 545 489, tell us what we are dealing with, and the number we quote is the number you pay. Quoting is free. For a commercial site it helps to mention floor area and whether food is handled, because both change the scope.
Does the old abattoir and saleyards site still affect pest pressure?
Not in the way people imagine. The livestock left in 1991 and the food-processing attractants went with them. What remains is the built legacy: large-format buildings with service corridors, loading docks and roof voids that suit rodents, and a lot of redeveloped ground where fill was brought in and levels were changed. That second point matters more for termite inspections than most people realise, because disturbed and imported ground behaves differently from an undisturbed block.
Do you service the shopping centres and commercial premises here?
Yes, and it is a substantial part of what we do in this suburb. Retail, warehouse and office premises get after-hours appointments where trading needs protecting, mapped and numbered rodent stations, and documentation suited to food safety or lease compliance. The detail is on our commercial pest control page.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Cannon Hill?
Every twelve months as the baseline. The QBCC advises no longer than twelve months between inspections in high hazard areas and CSIRO national termite survey places this region in the high hazard category. Book a termite inspection and we will carry the reminder forward for you.
I rent an apartment in Cannon Hill. Who arranges treatment?
Generally your property manager or the building’s body corporate, depending on whether the issue is inside your lot or in common areas like bin rooms, lift wells and basement car parking. Given how much of Cannon Hill is apartments and rentals, we deal with this constantly and are happy to point you at the right person to contact if you are not sure which it is.
How quickly can you get to Cannon Hill?
Same day or next in most cases, and we run Saturdays. Ring 1300 545 489 and flag anything urgent so it goes to the front of the queue. Commercial sites with an active problem should say so plainly, since those often come with a compliance clock attached.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
Twelve months on every standard treatment, with free re-treatment of any pest listed on your certificate that turns up again inside that period. Termites, rodent baiting and commercial contracts are quoted and warranted on their own terms. The detail is all in our terms and conditions.
