Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN CARBROOK
Carbrook was originally Gramzow, named by German settlers who arrived from 1867 after Gramzow in the Uckermark in northern Germany. The name was anglicised to Carbrook in 1916 amid anti-German sentiment during the First World War, and Gramzow State School, which had opened in November 1877, was renamed at the same time. Early farming was sugar cane, arrowroot and bananas, later pineapples, grapes, citrus and tobacco, with a sugar mill running from 1872 to 1926 before dairying took over. The Logan River was the main transport route, with a wharf and ferry at the end of Mount Cotton Road and the Alberton Ferry running from 1870 until 1948.
Three Queensland Heritage Register entries sit within the locality: the Carbrook Lutheran Cemetery at the corner of Mount Cotton and Wuduru Roads, a Fachwerk farmhouse built in the German half-timbered tradition, and the old Carbrook State School building, now owned by Logan City Council. For a locality of 1,330 people that is a remarkable concentration of heritage, and it reflects how long this ground has been settled.
Then there is the golf course. Bull sharks were washed into an oxbow lake at Carbrook Golf Club by flooding somewhere between 1991 and 1996 and lived there for roughly twenty years, the longest documented case of bull sharks continuously inhabiting a low-salinity environment. They were last seen in 2015, and a 2013 flood may have let some escape back to the river. Worth stating plainly since people still ask: the sharks are gone. What the story really illustrates is how regularly and how substantially the Logan River floods into this locality, and that is the single most useful thing to understand about pest and termite conditions here.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN CARBROOK
Termites do more damage to Australian homes each year than fire, flood and storms combined, and there is no insurance to fall back on. The CSIRO’s national survey assigns this region a high hazard rating. Carbrook sits at the top of that range for this batch: extensive Logan River frontage, wetland conservation areas, repeated documented flooding and large treed blocks all in the one locality.
An inspection on rural acreage covers far more than the house. We work the roof void, subfloor, internal walls and full perimeter with a moisture meter and thermal camera, then go out through sheds, cabins, stables, fence lines, stacked timber and the boundary where cleared land meets bush or wetland. Coptotermes acinaciformis nests in stumps and tree bases and forages up to 50 metres, which on a block measured in hectares covers a lot of ground.
Repeat flooding is the factor that makes Carbrook different from the other acreage localities we cover. Timber that is wetted and dried over and over becomes softer and considerably more attractive to a colony, subfloor moisture takes far longer to clear than owners expect, and post-flood repairs frequently put fresh timber into a structure that has not properly dried out. If your property has been through the river coming up, tell us. The QBCC recommends a licensed inspection every twelve months in areas rated high hazard.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
A lap of the house with a spray wand is not a treatment on a property this size. We start inside, through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then head up into the roof space and down into the subfloor where one exists.
Outside we cover the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, taking down webbing and wasp nests and placing dust or bait into voids a surface spray cannot reach. On a Carbrook property that extends to sheds, cabins, tanks and any structure out in the paddock, and we pay particular attention to anything that has been under water at some point.
Acreage takes longer than a suburban house and we will be upfront about that on the day rather than rushing it. The certificate goes out by email the same afternoon with your reminder set for next time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Carbrook Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Carbrook?
The property drives it, and Carbrook properties vary enormously. Ring 1300 545 489, tell us the block size, what buildings are on it and whether it has river or wetland frontage, and the quote we give you is the price you pay. Quoting is free. If the place has flooded before, mention that too.
Are the sharks still in the golf course lake?
No, and we get asked often enough that it is worth answering here. Bull sharks were washed into the oxbow lake at Carbrook Golf Club by flooding in the early to mid 1990s and lived there for about twenty years, which remains the longest recorded case of bull sharks surviving continuously in a low-salinity environment. They were last seen in 2015. A 2013 flood probably let some return to the river. What the story really tells you is how often and how far the Logan River comes up into this locality.
Our property floods. What does that mean for pests?
Two separate things. Immediately after, rodents move into dry buildings and cockroach numbers climb while drains and cavities stay damp, so call-outs spike for a few weeks. The longer-term issue is termites: repeatedly wetted timber is softer and more attractive to a colony, subfloor moisture hangs around much longer than people think, and repairs often introduce new timber into a structure that has not finished drying. An inspection six to twelve months after a flood is genuinely worthwhile.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Carbrook?
Every twelve months at minimum, and every six to nine months for river frontage or flood-affected properties. The QBCC puts the minimum at one inspection a year in high hazard areas and this region is rated high hazard by CSIRO national termite survey lists this region as high hazard. Book a termite inspection and we will set the reminder.
Do you treat cabins, sheds and non-standard dwellings?
Yes, and in Carbrook that matters more than most places. Nearly 18 percent of occupied dwellings here are recorded as something other than a conventional house, townhouse or flat, which covers cabins, caravans and similar. We treat those as well as the main residence, and a smaller lightweight structure often needs a different approach to a brick and slab home rather than the same treatment scaled down.
How quickly can you get to Carbrook?
Generally same day or the next, weekends included. Call 1300 545 489 and say if it is urgent. After heavy rain we do get a run of rodent call-outs out this way as water pushes them off the low ground, so if that is what is happening, let us know and we will do our best to prioritise.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
Twelve months of cover on every general pest treatment, with free re-treatment of anything listed on your certificate that returns during that period. Termite treatment and rodent baiting operate under a separate quote and warranty. Our terms and conditions spell the whole thing out.
