Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN COALFALLS
Coalfalls is one of the rare Ipswich suburbs whose name means exactly what it looks like. It comes from a house called Coalfalls built by the Blair family on Williams Street, and that house name almost certainly refers to coal seams visible in the bank of the Bremer River. Not a colliery, not an Irish town, just outcropping coal you could stand and look at. Neighbouring Blackstone, for all its mining history, was actually named after a place in Ireland.
Residential subdivision began here in the late 1840s, on the same pattern as neighbouring Woodend, which makes Coalfalls one of the earliest-settled localities anywhere in this district. That early start is still visible in the streets. Inglemere at 110 Williams Street is notable for early slab construction with a later addition dated 1860. Harlin Road is a designated heritage precinct of decorated timber Queenslanders, and Rowland Terrace holds an unusual group of workers’ cottages in an elevated position.
The suburb covers only about 0.8 square kilometres, bounded by the Bremer on the north and west, so it sits on a tight river peninsula with the Hancock Bridge crossing to Brassall. What it does not have is almost as striking: no school, no railway station, no shopping centre and essentially no industrial land. That leaves a compact, quiet, almost entirely residential pocket of old timber houses with mature gardens, which produces a very particular and fairly predictable set of pest problems.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN COALFALLS
Each year termites damage more Australian homes than fire, flood and storm combined, and the repair bill is not insurable. The CSIRO’s national survey puts the region in its high hazard band. In Coalfalls the housing itself is the exposure: timber Queenslanders on blocks that have been occupied since the middle of the nineteenth century, with gardens that have had as long to mature.
On a high-set Queenslander the subfloor decides the inspection, so we spend proper time under the house working across stumps, bearers, joists, ant caps and anything stored down there, alongside the roof void, internal walls, the full perimeter and yard timber, all read with a moisture meter and thermal camera. Coptotermes acinaciformis builds its nest in stumps and tree bases and ranges up to 50 metres out.
There is a genuine advantage to this housing type, and it is worth saying. An accessible subfloor shows you what is happening in a way a slab-on-ground house never will, where activity can travel inside a wall cavity for a long time before anything becomes visible. Coalfalls homes are readable, provided somebody actually reads them. The QBCC advises an annual inspection and report in high hazard areas, and on a house this old that annual look is the cheapest protection available.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
Walking the outside with a wand for ten minutes is not a treatment. Indoors comes first, the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, before we head up into the roof void and down into the subfloor, which on most homes here is a substantial part of the visit.
Outside covers the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, with webbing and wasp nests taken down and dust or bait placed into voids a spray will never penetrate. Under a high-set house we treat the stumps and the ground beneath them, and in these older gardens we look at timber edging, sheds and anything stacked against the house.
Most homes take 60 to 90 minutes, more where the subfloor is large or awkward to get into. We email the certificate the same afternoon and set your reminder for next time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Coalfalls Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Coalfalls?
House size and subfloor access drive it more than anything here, since a large high-set Queenslander is a longer job than a compact cottage. Ring 1300 545 489, tell us about the house, and what we quote is what you pay, free to obtain. Given how old most of this housing is, it is worth asking about a termite inspection while you are on the call.
Is Coalfalls actually named after coal?
It is, and it is one of the few names around here that means what it appears to mean. The name comes from a house called Coalfalls on Williams Street, and the house name almost certainly refers to coal seams that were visible in the bank of the Bremer River. So not a mine, not a colliery, just outcropping coal in the riverbank. Blackstone, a few kilometres away and far more heavily mined, was named after a place in Ireland instead.
My house is an old Queenslander. Better or worse for termites?
Both at once, and the balance is favourable. Old timber housing gives a colony more material to work with, and stumps, bearers and joists are all vulnerable. But a high-set home with an accessible subfloor is far easier to inspect properly than a modern slab, where damage can be well advanced before anything shows. Higher risk, much better detection. The result is that a Queenslander rewards regular inspection more than almost any other house type.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Coalfalls?
Annually, without stretching it. The QBCC recommends a licensed inspection every twelve months in areas rated high hazard and CSIRO national termite survey scores this region high hazard. Organise a termite inspection and we will carry the reminder forward each year.
Does Coalfalls flood?
The suburb sits on a tight bend of the Bremer with the river on two sides, so the question is a fair one. We could not find a Coalfalls-specific inundation record for 2011 or 2022 in the sources we checked, and we are not going to assert an extent we cannot support. Ipswich City Council’s flood mapping will give you a property-level answer, which is far more useful than anything at suburb level. What we can tell you is what river proximity means for moisture, rodents and termite risk on your particular block.
How quickly can you get to Coalfalls?
Usually same day or next, and we do Saturdays. Call 1300 545 489 and let us know if something is urgent, whether that is a wasp nest near a door, movement in the roof, or something you have spotted in the subfloor.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
A full year on every general pest treatment, and anything named on your certificate that returns during that time gets re-treated at no cost. Termites and rodent baiting are handled as separate services with separate cover. It is all documented in our terms and conditions.
