Our Local KNowledge

COMMON PESTS IN DURACK

Durack was named in 1976 after Michael Durack, a landholder at the Archerfield pastoral station that once covered this land. The name came out of a local newspaper competition, when residents voted to rename the expanding eastern portion of an area that had been known variously as Oxley South, Serviceton and Inala. That is worth knowing, because plenty of people still treat Durack as part of Inala. It has been its own suburb for close to fifty years.

The residential fabric here began as Housing Commission development and has been progressively privatised and infilled since, which is why the townhouse share is so high compared with the detached-house suburbs around it. Durack is also now majority overseas-born, with only 48.5 percent of residents born in Australia, and Vietnamese ancestry at 20 percent sits essentially level with English at 21 percent. The Phap Quang Temple and the Australian International Islamic College, which opened in 2002, both reflect that.

Oxley Creek runs through the suburb and Blunder Creek, one of its tributaries, gives Blunder Road its name. Along the eastern edge sits part of the Archerfield Wetlands, 150 hectares of eucalypt forest, grassland, freshwater wetland and creeks supporting over 170 bird species. That land carries a genuine industrial legacy, having previously held a wastewater treatment plant, waste disposal, meat processing, landfill and grazing. Restored wetland on old fill, right beside housing, produces reliable rodent and mosquito pressure and makes termite inspections on nearby properties harder to read than they look.

Termites

TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN DURACK

Termites cost Australian homeowners more each year than fire, flood and storm damage combined, and no insurance policy picks it up. CSIRO’s national termite survey grades this region high hazard. In Durack the creek corridor and the wetland are the obvious risk factors, but the made ground is the underrated one, since imported fill and altered levels change how moisture sits and how easily a colony can approach a building unseen.

We inspect the roof void, subfloor where one exists, internal walls, the entire perimeter, fence lines and yard timber, using a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing has to be opened up. In a townhouse the scope widens to the shared roof space and party walls, since a colony inside a row of attached dwellings does not stop at a lot boundary. Coptotermes acinaciformis nests in stumps and tree bases and forages up to 50 metres, which covers a lot of an attached complex.

Where a property is owned by one party and occupied by another, we write the report so it works for whoever needs it, dated and detailed enough to sit in a property file. The QBCC advises no longer than twelve months between inspections in high hazard areas, and that recommendation does not change based on who holds the keys.

What you get

What's Included in a Pest Treatment

A quick pass around the outside walls does not amount to a treatment. Inside is covered first, the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, before we move up into the roof cavity and down into the subfloor where there is one.

Outdoors we cover the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, removing webbing and wasp nests and placing dust or bait into voids a surface spray never touches. In a townhouse complex we arrange access across the lots that actually need it, rather than treating one and leaving the problem next door.

Most jobs run 60 to 90 minutes. The certificate is emailed the same day, written so it suits a property file where the home is tenanted, and we set the next reminder before leaving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Durack Pest Control FAQs

The things people ask us most before they book.

How much does pest control cost in Durack?

It depends on whether it is a house or a townhouse and what we find once we inspect. Phone 1300 545 489, describe the property, and the quote we give you is the amount you pay, free to obtain either way. If you are in an attached complex, mention it, because that can change how the job is best organised.

Is Durack part of Inala?

No, though it is an understandable mix-up given the history. This area was known as Oxley South, Serviceton and Inala at various points before residents voted in a naming competition and Durack became its own suburb in 1976. We service both, so if you are unsure which side of the boundary you sit on, give us the street address and we will confirm it on the call.

We're near the Archerfield Wetlands. What does that mean for pests?

More rodent movement and more mosquito activity after rain, which is the normal trade-off for living beside 150 hectares of restored habitat with 170-plus bird species in it. There is also a practical point specific to this site: the wetlands sit on ground that previously held a wastewater plant, landfill and meat processing, so the fill and drainage there are not natural. For properties backing onto it, that mainly means we look harder at ground levels and moisture around the house than we would elsewhere.

How often should I get a termite inspection in Durack?

Annually as a minimum, and more often for properties close to Oxley Creek or the wetland margin. The QBCC calls for annual inspection and reporting in areas carrying a high hazard rating, which this region is under CSIRO national termite survey classifies the region as high hazard. Book a termite inspection and we will keep the reminder for next year.

I'm renting in Durack. Can I book a treatment?

Usually it needs to go through your property manager or owner, since they are who we invoice and who receives the certificate. With a third of Durack rented we handle that constantly, and we are happy to explain what to ask for if you are not sure who to contact. If there is an urgent problem, call us anyway and we will help you work out the right path.

How quickly can you get to Durack?

Typically same day or the next, weekends included. Ring 1300 545 489 and let us know if anything needs attention now, whether that is a wasp nest near a doorway, rodents in the roof, or damage you have just noticed.

What does the 12-month warranty cover?

Twelve months on every general pest treatment, with free re-treatment of any pest listed on your certificate that returns inside that period. Termite work and rodent baiting are separate services on their own quote and warranty. It is written out in full in our terms and conditions.
