Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN EAGLEBY
Here is a fact almost nobody outside the suburb knows. The Beenleigh Rum Distillery is not in Beenleigh. It is in Eagleby, on Distillery Road, and it has been on the Queensland Heritage Register since March 2004. Francis Gooding took out the licence in June 1884, the brick spirit store dates from around 1890, and the site preserves a nineteenth century copper pot still believed to be the earliest of its type in Queensland. It was for many years the oldest working distillery in the state.
The rest of the history runs along similar lines. The name came from a settler asking an Aboriginal man about eagles nesting near the mouth of the Albert River, and the area was called Philadelphia before that. The Zornig family settled around 1865 as part of German immigration into the Logan district, and German heritage survives in street names, a former Lutheran church on Fryars Road and the cemetery headstones. Sugar was the early industry, with the local mill the second-last operating in the district before it closed in 1943. The suburb was surveyed in 1971 and subdivided through the 1970s and 80s.
Eagleby sits on the southern bank of the Logan River right at its junction with the Albert, so there is significant water on two sides. The Eagleby Wetlands on Logan Street are a council reserve running alongside the Albert, with mangrove areas, melaleuca and brackish swamps, a freshwater lake and former cane fields, and parts of it are tidal. It supports over 200 native bird species including nineteen of Australia’s twenty-four raptor species, and it is Yugambeh country with scarred trees and stone tools still present. Tidal wetland directly against housing means steady mosquito pressure and consistent rodent movement, and it puts the termite conversation on a different footing than a dry inland block.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN EAGLEBY
Termites wreck more Australian homes in a year than fire, flood and storms combined, and it is not something insurance will pay for. CSIRO national termite survey puts this region in its high hazard band. Eagleby adds sustained ground moisture to that, sitting at a river confluence with tidal wetland alongside, and moisture is the single biggest factor in whether a colony finds a property worth approaching.
We inspect the roof void, the subfloor where one exists, internal walls, the complete external perimeter, fence lines and any timber in the yard, reading it all with a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing needs cutting. Near the wetland margin we extend the boundary check, since Coptotermes acinaciformis nests in stumps and tree bases and forages up to 50 metres, and melaleuca swamp holds a great deal of standing and fallen timber.
Where a property is tenanted, and in Eagleby that is close to half of them, we produce the report in a form the managing agent can actually file, dated and specific enough to be useful at lease renewal or sale. The QBCC recommends a licensed pest controller inspect and report on a property every year, or more often in high hazard areas, and whether a house is owner-occupied or rented makes no difference to the termites.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
A ten minute lap of the outside is not a treatment and we will not describe it as one. The work begins indoors through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then goes up into the roof void and down into the subfloor where there is one.
Outside we work the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, taking down webbing and wasp nests and placing dust or bait into voids a surface spray will not reach. On a property near the wetlands or either river we concentrate on the rear boundary, because that is the direction almost everything is coming from.
Most homes here run 60 to 90 minutes. The certificate is emailed the same day, written to suit a property file where the home is rented, and we can put multiple properties on one recurring schedule for agents managing several in the suburb.

Frequently Asked Questions
Eagleby Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Eagleby?
It comes down to the property and what the inspection finds. Phone 1300 545 489, describe the home, and the figure we quote is the figure you pay, free either way. If you are near the wetlands or the river, mention it, because that changes where we focus and what we recommend for inspection frequency.
Is the Beenleigh Rum Distillery actually in Eagleby?
Yes, on Distillery Road, and it has been heritage listed since 2004. The name refers to the district rather than the suburb boundary, which catches almost everyone out. It is a genuinely good piece of local trivia and it makes the point that suburb boundaries around here do not always match what things are called. If you are ever unsure which suburb your property sits in, give us the street address and we will confirm it rather than guessing from the postcode.
We live near the Eagleby Wetlands. What should we expect?
More mosquitoes after rain and through the warmer months, more rodent movement along the boundary, and more spider activity than a block further inland. Parts of the wetland are tidal and include mangrove and brackish swamp, which means some of the biting insect pressure comes from habitat we simply cannot treat. What we can do is reduce harbourage on your own property, treat the yard and building properly, and be honest about where the limits are. The wetlands are a genuine asset to the suburb, not a nuisance to be solved.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Eagleby?
Every twelve months as a minimum, and more often near the rivers or the wetland edge where ground moisture stays high. The QBCC sets annual inspection as the minimum standard for high hazard areas and CSIRO’s national termite survey rates the region high hazard. Book a termite inspection and we will keep the reminder for you.
I'm renting in Eagleby. How do I get something treated?
In most cases it goes through your property manager or landlord, since they are who we invoice and who receives the certificate. With nearly half of Eagleby rented this is the normal path and we deal with it every week. Call us anyway if there is an active problem and we will tell you exactly what to ask your manager for, which usually speeds things up.
How quickly can you get to Eagleby?
Typically same day or the next, and we run Saturdays. Ring 1300 545 489 and flag anything urgent. We do see call-out volumes jump here after heavy rain, when water pushes rodents out of the low ground and into houses, so if that is your situation say so and we will try to prioritise it.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
Twelve months on every general pest treatment, with free re-treatment of anything named on your certificate that shows up again inside that window. Termite jobs and rodent baiting are priced and covered under a separate arrangement. The full wording is in our terms and conditions.
