Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN EASTERN HEIGHTS
Eastern Heights is exactly what the name says: the high ridge on the eastern side of the Ipswich CBD, on Limestone Hill. The name first appeared on maps in 1930, but the area had been drawing wealthy residents well before that, with several grand residences on large sites by the late 1800s. Cintra Street, Chermside Road and Whitehill Road still carry distinguished homes with views out to the northern hills.
Two of those houses are on the Queensland Heritage Register, both listed in October 1992. Garowie at 59 Whitehill Road was built around 1888 by Robert Wilson and Co for James Clarke Cribb, son of Benjamin Cribb of Cribb and Foote, to a design by Ipswich builder-architect Samuel Shenton. It is late Victorian, rendered brick with two-storey verandahs, cast iron lace balustrading and a central gabled portico, in a prominent position on the ridge. Fairy Knoll at 2A Robertson Road was designed in 1896 and built between 1897 and 1901 for timber merchant Thomas Hancock Jr to plans by George Brockwell Gill, a two-storey brick Federation Filigree house with polychromatic brickwork and a roof lantern. The Hancock family lived there for 46 years before it became a maternal and child welfare home in 1952.
What all that means practically is a suburb of large, old, substantially timbered houses with mature established gardens, held by long-term owners, on ground that is high and dry rather than flood-prone. Eastern Heights is the smallest and densest of the Ipswich suburbs in this batch at 1.7 square kilometres, and its population actually fell slightly between 2016 and 2021, which is unusual around here. There is no school in the suburb at all and no railway station.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN EASTERN HEIGHTS
Termites destroy more Australian housing each year than fire, flood and storms combined, and it is not recoverable through insurance. CSIRO’s national survey puts the region in its high hazard band. Eastern Heights carries a particular version of that risk: a great deal of old, substantial timber in houses that predate modern termite management entirely, surrounded by mature gardens with established trees, stumps and decades of accumulated growth.
On an older Ipswich home the inspection covers the roof void, the subfloor, internal walls, the full external perimeter, stumps, fence lines, outbuildings and any timber in the garden, all read with a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing needs to be cut open. Mature gardens are the point of difference here. Coptotermes acinaciformis nests in stumps and tree bases and forages up to 50 metres, and a century-old garden usually holds several candidates.
We also take particular care in houses with genuine heritage value. Inspection here has to be non-destructive, which is exactly what a moisture meter and thermal camera are for, and any recommendation needs to account for original fabric rather than treating the building like a modern brick veneer. If your home is heritage listed or heritage significant, tell us on the call. The QBCC’s recommendation is annual inspection and reporting wherever the hazard rating is high, and on a nineteenth century house that yearly look is genuinely the cheapest insurance available.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
A quick lap of the outside with a spray wand is not a service. We begin inside, working the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then continue up into the roof space and down into the subfloor, which on most homes here is worth proper time.
The exterior covers the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, with webbing and wasp nests cleared and dust or bait placed into voids that spraying alone will not reach. In a mature garden we also look at stumps, old timber edging, sheds and anything stacked against the house, because on a property like this those are usually where the story starts.
Older homes with subfloors and big gardens generally take longer than 90 minutes and we would rather tell you that than rush. The certificate is emailed the same day with the next reminder set.

Frequently Asked Questions
Eastern Heights Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Eastern Heights?
Houses here vary enormously, from compact units through to large nineteenth century homes on big blocks, so the quote follows the property. Phone 1300 545 489, tell us about the house and its age, and what we quote is what you pay. The quote costs nothing. If it is an older home with a subfloor, mention that, since it makes for a more thorough job.
We own a heritage listed home. Can you still inspect it?
Yes, and non-destructive inspection is exactly what our equipment is for. A moisture meter and thermal camera let us read wall cavities and timber without cutting into anything, which matters a great deal on a house with original fabric worth preserving. Any treatment recommendation we make will account for the building’s heritage value rather than defaulting to what you would do on a modern brick veneer. Tell us on the call and we will plan the visit accordingly.
Why are older Ipswich homes higher risk for termites?
Several reasons at once. They contain far more structural timber than a modern house, they generally predate any form of termite management system, and they sit in gardens that have had a century to mature, which means established trees, old stumps and accumulated timber within easy foraging range. The compensation is that a high-set home with an accessible subfloor is much easier to inspect properly than a slab, so problems can be caught early if somebody actually looks.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Eastern Heights?
Every twelve months without stretching it, and we would say that more firmly here than in most suburbs. The QBCC recommends yearly inspection by a licensed pest controller in high hazard areas and CSIRO national termite survey scores this region high hazard. On an old timber house the difference between catching activity at twelve months and at three years can be structural. Book a termite inspection and we will hold the reminder.
Does Eastern Heights flood?
The suburb sits on the Limestone Hill ridge above the Ipswich CBD, which is the entire reason for the name, and we found no documented flood history for it. That makes it one of the lower flood exposure suburbs in Ipswich, unlike North Ipswich down in the Bremer bend. For a property-specific answer Ipswich City Council’s mapping is the place to check rather than relying on a general statement.
How quickly can you get to Eastern Heights?
Typically same day or the next, weekends included, and sitting just east of the CBD makes it an easy suburb for us to reach. Call 1300 545 489 and say if something is urgent, and it moves up the schedule.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
Twelve months on every general pest treatment, with free re-treatment of any pest named on your certificate that comes back inside that period. Termite work and rodent baiting are quoted and warranted separately. Our terms and conditions set out the detail in full.
