Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN EBBW VALE
The name is Welsh and the pronunciation catches people out, with the w sounding like an oo. Ebbw Vale takes its name from the Ebbw Vale colliery opened by John Jones in 1877, which in turn borrowed the name of the Welsh ironworks and coal town of Ebbw Vale, or Glynebwy. The railway station opened in 1909 as St Helens and was renamed Ebbw Vale in December 1910 after the mine. Alongside the colliery came potteries, brickworks and clay pipe works, including Brittains Bricks and Pipes and the Ebbw Vale Brick Company from 1911. The Whitwood Estate subdivision was selling suburban blocks by 1927.
Two things make this suburb genuinely unusual and neither has anything to do with pest control, which is why they are worth knowing. The Rylance No. 5 open cut here yielded the highest concentration of dinosaur tracks known in southern Queensland, dating to the Late Triassic. And the Cooneana olive, one of Australia’s rarest plants and at one point presumed extinct, was rediscovered in the Ebbw Vale locality in 2009. For a suburb of 540 people, that is a remarkable pair of claims.
Ebbw Vale Memorial Park on Brisbane Road went onto the Queensland Heritage Register in 2004. The land was made available to Whitwood Colliery employees by the Stafford brothers for sport, with a soccer match reported there as early as July 1892, and the war memorial is a life-sized digger by sculptor Andrew Lang Petrie, unveiled in May 1918 honouring 22 local volunteers. St Helen’s Soccer Club, formed in 1912, produced representatives at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. What the suburb does not have is a school or a shopping centre of its own, which keeps it quiet and residential.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN EBBW VALE
Termites wreck more Australian homes each year than fire, flood and storms combined, and insurance will not pay for any of it. CSIRO’s national termite survey rates the region high hazard. Ebbw Vale’s exposure is mostly about age rather than water. This is old, long-settled ground with housing spanning from the 1920s subdivisions onward, which means a large share of it predates modern termite management entirely or is well past the working life of anything installed at construction.
The inspection runs through the roof void, the subfloor where one exists, internal walls, the complete perimeter, fence lines and any timber in the yard, checked with a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing needs cutting open. Coptotermes acinaciformis forages up to 50 metres from its nest, and on established blocks in an old mining suburb there is usually mature timber or an old stump somewhere inside that radius.
One thing we will not do is tell you Ebbw Vale is a flood suburb. It touches no river, sits inland bounded by the Main Line railway and the Cunningham Highway, and it did not appear in Ipswich City Council’s suburb breakdown for the 2022 event. Plenty of generic pest pages would put flood copy here because it is in Ipswich. It does not belong. The QBCC treats an annual inspection as the baseline in high hazard areas, and that stands on the age of the housing alone.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
A few minutes with a spray wand around the outside walls is not a treatment. We work indoors first, through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then move up into the roof cavity and down into the subfloor where there is one.
Outside we cover the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, clearing webbing and wasp nests and placing dust or bait into voids that no surface spray will reach. On the older homes here we also look at stumps, sheds and stored timber, because those sit outside the house where nobody thinks to check.
Most jobs take 60 to 90 minutes. The certificate comes by email the same day and we set the reminder for your next service before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ebbw Vale Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Ebbw Vale?
It comes down to the size of the home and what the inspection shows. Ring 1300 545 489, describe the property, and what we quote is what you pay, with no charge for the quote. Most housing here is well established, so a termite inspection is worth asking about at the same time.
How do you say Ebbw Vale?
The w sounds like an oo, which is Welsh rather than English. The suburb is named after the Ebbw Vale colliery, opened here in 1877, which itself borrowed the name of the Welsh ironworks town of Ebbw Vale. It is a small thing but locals notice when someone gets it right, and it is a reminder of how much Welsh mining history sits in this corner of Ipswich.
Does Ebbw Vale flood?
Not that we can verify, and we would rather say that plainly than write flood copy because the suburb happens to be in Ipswich. Ebbw Vale touches no river, sits inland bounded by the railway and the Cunningham Highway, and was not named in council’s suburb breakdown for the 2022 flood. If you want certainty for a specific address, Ipswich City Council’s flood mapping is the authoritative source. Our point is simply that we are not going to invent a risk to sell against.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Ebbw Vale?
Every twelve months. The QBCC recommends property owners in high hazard areas inspect every year without fail and CSIRO national termite survey places this region in the high hazard category. Age of housing is the main driver here rather than water, and old housing does not get safer on its own. Book a termite inspection and the next one gets flagged automatically.
Are there really dinosaur tracks here?
There are, or were. The Rylance No. 5 open cut in Ebbw Vale produced the highest concentration of dinosaur tracks known in southern Queensland, from the Late Triassic. The suburb also has form in botany: the Cooneana olive, one of Australia’s rarest plants and once presumed extinct, was rediscovered in this locality in 2009. None of it affects your ant problem, but it is a genuinely unusual place.
How quickly can you get to Ebbw Vale?
Generally same day or the next, including Saturdays. Call 1300 545 489 and flag anything urgent, a wasp nest by the door, scratching overhead at night, or damage you have just uncovered, and we will move you up the run.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
Twelve months on every general pest treatment, with free re-treatment of any pest named on your certificate that reappears inside the year. Termite treatment and rodent baiting each carry their own quote and warranty terms. All of it is written into our terms and conditions.
