Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN GAILES
Gailes has one of the stranger naming situations in South East Queensland. The name comes from Western Gailes Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland, proposed by golf club interests, and is said to mean overgrown by bog-myrtle. The area was earlier called Pullen Pullen Flats, then the railway siding was renamed Dingo Hill in 1919 after a high point John Oxley named in 1823, then upgraded and renamed Gailes railway station in September 1925.
Here is the twist. Neither Gailes railway station nor Gailes Golf Club is actually in Gailes. A boundary rationalisation around 1986 realigned the suburb to the Brisbane and Ipswich municipal boundary, which put the golf club and the station into Wacol and Dingo Hill into Camira, leaving the residential core entirely in Ipswich City. So the suburb is named after a golf club it no longer contains, via a station it no longer contains. If you are trying to work out whether your address is in Gailes, the golf club is not a reliable guide.
The suburb covers only 1.3 square kilometres, bounded north by the Ipswich Motorway and the main line railway and west by Woogaroo Creek, a Brisbane River tributary. There is documented flood exposure: in January 2011 Brisbane River floodwater backed up across the Woogaroo Creek floodplain south of Gailes, over the golf course and the Ipswich Motorway. The suburb is predominantly residential with five parks and a small area of undeveloped bushland in the south-west, and it has no school, no shopping centre and, as covered, no railway station of its own.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN GAILES
Australian homes suffer more termite damage in a year than they do from fire, flood and storms combined, and insurance covers none of it. CSIRO’s national survey puts the region in its high hazard band. Gailes sits against the Woogaroo Creek floodplain, which means ground that holds moisture, and moisture is the single biggest factor in whether a colony finds a property worth working toward.
We cover the roof void, the subfloor where one exists, internal walls, the full external perimeter, fence lines and yard timber, using a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing has to be cut into. On blocks nearer the creek we extend the boundary check and pay close attention to drainage and ground levels, since Coptotermes acinaciformis nests in stumps and the base of trees and feeds up to 50 metres away, and the creek corridor and the bushland pocket in the south-west both supply nesting habitat.
With close to half the suburb tenanted, most of our termite reports here go to a managing agent rather than a resident. Those are written dated and specific enough to sit in a property file and be useful at lease renewal or sale. It is worth landlords knowing that termite activity found late in a rental is dramatically more expensive than activity found on a routine annual visit, because nobody living in the house is looking under it. The QBCC advises an annual inspection and report in high hazard areas.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
Ten minutes with a wand around the outside is not a service. Inside is covered first, kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, before we head up into the roof void and down into the subfloor where there is one.
Outside we cover the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, clearing webbing and wasp nests and pushing dust or bait into voids no spray reaches. On blocks toward the creek we give drainage and standing water real attention, since that is what drives the recurring problems on that side of the suburb.
Most homes run 60 to 90 minutes. The certificate is emailed the same day and written to suit a property file where the home is rented, and multiple managed properties can go on one recurring schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions
Gailes Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Gailes?
The property and the inspection findings set it. Phone 1300 545 489, describe the home, and the figure we quote is the figure you pay, free to obtain. If it is a rental and you need documentation for the file, say so when booking and we will format the report accordingly.
Is Gailes Golf Club in Gailes?
No, and neither is Gailes railway station. A boundary rationalisation around 1986 realigned the suburb to the municipal boundary, which moved the golf club and the station into Wacol and Dingo Hill into Camira, leaving the residential core in Ipswich City. So the suburb is named after a Scottish golf club via a local club it no longer contains. It is a genuinely odd situation and it catches out anyone trying to work out where a boundary sits. Give us a street address and we will tell you which suburb you are actually in.
Does Gailes flood?
There is documented exposure. In January 2011 Brisbane River floodwater backed up across the Woogaroo Creek floodplain south of Gailes, over the golf course and the Ipswich Motorway. For a property-level answer, council flood mapping is the right source rather than a suburb-level statement. What we can tell you is that floodplain proximity means ground that holds moisture, which lifts both mosquito activity after rain and the appeal of your subfloor to a termite colony.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Gailes?
Annually at minimum, and worth tightening for properties closer to the creek. The QBCC recommends a licensed inspection every twelve months in areas rated high hazard and CSIRO national termite survey scores this region high hazard. Get a termite inspection in the diary and we will keep it there.
I manage rentals in Gailes. Can you handle entry and exit reports?
Yes, and with 44.4 percent of the suburb tenanted it is a large part of our work here. You get a written, dated report suitable for the property file, lease renewal or sale rather than a verbal summary. If you look after several properties in the area they can go onto one schedule so nothing falls through the gaps between tenancies.
How quickly can you get to Gailes?
Same day or next in most cases, weekends included, and the Ipswich Motorway on the northern boundary makes it quick to reach. Ring 1300 545 489 and say if it is urgent. After heavy rain we do see more rodent call-outs on this side, so mention that if it applies.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
All general pest treatments carry twelve months, and anything named on your certificate that reappears within that time is re-treated at no cost. Termite treatment and rodent baiting operate under a separate quote and warranty. It is all documented in our terms and conditions.
