Our Local KNowledge

COMMON PESTS IN GUMDALE

Gumdale started out as Grassdale. The Grassdale Land Company was established in January 1885 to acquire Grassdale Paddocks in the parish of Tingalpa, and a public auction that November disposed of 42 lots across 144 acres. The name lasted until 1942, when it was changed to Gumdale to stop confusion with Grassdale in South Australia. Grassdale State School, opened in 1935, became Gumdale State School in the same year. Until the 1970s the suburb stretched further west than it does now, so older references to Gumdale can cover land that is today part of Belmont, Chandler or Wakerley.

The reason Gumdale matters to a pest controller is what has been left standing on the blocks. A Land for Wildlife property survey in the suburb documents remnant scribbly gum forest with trees estimated at 100 to 150 years old, around 90 percent canopy cover, and roughly twenty scribbly gums carrying multiple hollows that support four parrot species along with bats, possums and sugar gliders. Koalas are present, a resident carpet python was recorded, and about 155 plant species were counted. The site has not burnt since 1960.

Mature, long-unburnt eucalypt forest sitting on private residential lots is an unusual arrangement, and it produces an unusual pest profile. Wildlife moves through constantly rather than occasionally. Spiders and rodents have permanent habitat rather than a corridor. And from a termite point of view, decades of accumulated deadwood, old stumps and hollow-bearing trees within a few dozen metres of the house is about as favourable a setting as a colony could ask for.

Termites

TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN GUMDALE

Termite damage costs Australian homeowners more in a year than fire, flood and storm damage combined, with no insurance behind it. The CSIRO’s national termite survey rates this part of Queensland high hazard, and Gumdale sits at the extreme end of that band. Mature unburnt eucalypt forest retained on the lot itself, with old stumps and standing deadwood, is textbook habitat for Coptotermes acinaciformis, which nests in tree bases and stumps and forages up to 50 metres from the colony.

On an acreage block that 50 metre figure does real work. On a standard suburban lot it means your neighbour’s tree. On a Gumdale block it means a substantial part of your own property is within foraging range of the house, so the inspection cannot stop at the building line. We cover the roof void, subfloor, internal walls and full perimeter with a moisture meter and thermal camera, then work outward through sheds, stables, fence lines, stacked timber and the treeline itself.

The honest advice for a heavily treed Gumdale property is that a single annual inspection is the minimum rather than the target. The QBCC calls for annual inspection and reporting in areas carrying a high hazard rating, and a house surrounded by hollow-bearing century-old gums is squarely in the more often category.

What you get

What's Included in a Pest Treatment

A quick pass around the house does not cover an acreage property, and we do not pretend otherwise. The job begins indoors through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then moves up into the roof space and down into the subfloor where there is one.

Outdoors we work the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, clear webbing and wasp nests, and place dust or bait into voids no spray will reach. On a Gumdale block that extends to sheds, garages, water tanks, stacked firewood and the boundary where mown ground meets the trees, because that transition line is where most of the activity actually sits.

Acreage takes longer than a suburban house and we will give you a realistic figure on the day instead of a standard one. The certificate goes out by email the same afternoon with your next reminder already set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gumdale Pest Control FAQs

The things people ask us most before they book.

How much does pest control cost in Gumdale?

Acreage is a different job to a suburban house, so the quote follows the property rather than a standard rate. Phone 1300 545 489, tell us the block size and what buildings are on it, and the quote we give you is what you pay. Quoting is free. Let us know how heavily treed the property is, because on a Gumdale block that changes the scope more than the floor area does.

Do you treat sheds and outbuildings?

Yes, and on a Gumdale property they are often where the useful findings are. Sheds, garages, pump houses and stacked timber all sit outside the house where nobody is looking, and they are typically the first structures a colony reaches. We include them as standard rather than charging them as an extra, because inspecting the house alone on a block this size does not tell you much.

We have mature gum trees close to the house. Is that a problem?

It is a factor to manage rather than a problem to solve, and it is one of the genuine pleasures of living here. Old scribbly gums with hollows support a lot of wildlife and they are the reason the suburb looks the way it does. They also sit well inside termite foraging range of most Gumdale houses, so the sensible approach is to inspect more often and keep the ground around the house clear, not to remove the trees.

How often should I get a termite inspection in Gumdale?

Every twelve months as an absolute minimum, and every six to nine months on a heavily treed block. The QBCC recommends a licensed pest controller inspect and report on a property every year, or more often in high hazard areas and CSIRO national termite survey identifies this region as high hazard. Book a termite inspection and we will hold your reminder.

We get possums, koalas and snakes through the property. Does that affect the treatment?

It affects where and how we apply, yes. On a property with regular wildlife movement we are deliberate about placement, favouring targeted treatment of voids and specific harbourage over broad external spraying. Tell us what you see on the property when you book. Carpet pythons in particular are worth mentioning, since they are effective rodent control in their own right and there is no reason to work against that.

How quickly can you get to Gumdale?

Usually same day or next, and we work Saturdays. Call 1300 545 489 and say if it is urgent, whether that is a wasp nest at the door, something in the roof, or damage you have just found in a shed or fence post.

What does the 12-month warranty cover?

Twelve months of cover on every general pest treatment, with free re-treatment of anything named on your certificate that returns inside the year. Termite work and rodent baiting sit on their own quotes and warranties. The complete detail sits in our terms and conditions.
