Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN MURARRIE
The name is the giveaway. Murarrie was originally Mooraree, after Mooraree House built by Christopher Porter in 1861, and the word derives from mudherri, a Yuggera word meaning sticky or muddy. It was renamed Murarrie in 1907. Queensland Places puts it plainly when describing the northern part of the suburb: much of that part of Murarrie is wetland. That is not a historical footnote, it is a description of the ground conditions people are still building and working on.
Industry arrived early and never really left. The Queensland Freezing and Food Export Company meatworks was established at Queensport in 1881, and the Queensport Aquarium opened in 1889 with a zoo and dance halls before the 1893 flood damaged it into closure. The 1889 railway brought a bacon factory in 1913, electric powerhouses in 1926 and 1953, and eventually a bulk sugar terminal and jetty. Gibson Island was a genuine island until the Doughboy training wall of 1900 to 1902 turned it into an isthmus, and it was used as a burial site for bubonic plague victims in 1900.
The residential pocket in the south-west is the newest part of the story. The meatworks and stock-holding areas closed and sold through the 1990s, polluting industries were moved out, and Mirvac’s Park Hill estate was built on the former saleyards land. That leaves a suburb where a modern housing estate sits within a short walk of heavy industry, the Brisbane River on one side and tidal Bulimba Creek mangroves on the other two. Rodent pressure, mosquitoes and midges are all part of normal life here, and they come from the landscape rather than from anything residents are doing wrong.

TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN MURARRIE
Australian homes suffer more termite damage annually than fire, flood and storms combined, and insurance covers none of it. CSIRO’s national survey assigns this region a high hazard rating. In Murarrie the complicating factor is ground moisture. Wetland ground, tidal creek margins and a century of industrial fill and level changes produce conditions that hold water and make a property harder to read than an ordinary suburban block.
A residential inspection takes in the roof void, subfloor where present, internal walls, the full perimeter, fence lines and yard timber, all assessed with a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing needs to be opened up. In the Park Hill area, where homes sit on redeveloped industrial land, we pay close attention to slab edges and anywhere drainage has been altered since construction.
For warehouse and port premises we include termite risk assessment within a broader commercial contract, which matters for anyone responsible for structural timber, pallets, stored stock or lease obligations in a large building. The QBCC recommends a licensed inspection every twelve months in areas rated high hazard, and that applies to industrial buildings as much as to houses.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
Ten minutes with a spray wand outside is not a service, and we will not sell it as one. Inside comes first, through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then into the roof void and the subfloor where one exists.
The exterior pass covers the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, taking down webbing and wasp nests and pushing dust or bait into voids that spraying cannot reach. On industrial and port premises we map and number rodent stations, schedule around operations, and provide documentation suited to food safety, port or lease compliance.
Most homes here take 60 to 90 minutes. Commercial sites are quoted on the actual building rather than a rate card. The certificate is emailed the same day, with a reminder set or a recurring schedule in place for commercial clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Murarrie Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Murarrie?
It depends heavily on whether we are treating a house in Park Hill or a warehouse on Gibson Island, and those are very different jobs. Ring 1300 545 489, describe the property, and the quote we give is the price you pay, free either way. For a commercial site, floor area and whether food or produce is stored will shape the scope more than anything else.
Do you service the industrial premises and port facilities here?
Yes, that is the larger share of what we do in Murarrie. Warehouse, port and light industrial sites get mapped and numbered rodent stations, appointments scheduled around operations, and documentation that holds up to food safety, port or lease audits. See our commercial pest control page for how that works.
We're close to the mangroves. Why do we get so many mosquitoes and midges?
Because tidal mangrove and saltmarsh margins are natural breeding habitat, and Murarrie has them on two sides along the Brisbane River and Bulimba Creek. Biting midges in particular breed in tidal mud and are largely unaffected by residential treatment, so the honest answer is that we can reduce mosquito harbourage around your property and treat the yard, but we cannot treat an estuary. Screening, timing outdoor activity away from dawn and dusk, and clearing any standing water on your own block will do more than anything sold as a spray.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Murarrie?
Once a year at minimum. Wetland ground and industrial fill both make for higher risk and trickier inspections, so it is not a suburb to stretch the interval in. The QBCC puts the minimum at one inspection a year in high hazard areas and CSIRO national termite survey lists this region as high hazard. Book a termite inspection and we will set the reminder.
Is Murarrie just part of Cannon Hill?
No, though plenty of people treat it that way, and Morningside gets lumped in too. Murarrie is its own locality with its own history, and it contains the designated neighbourhoods of Queensport and Gibson Island. It matters practically as well as pedantically, because the conditions on a riverside industrial block in Murarrie are nothing like a residential street in Cannon Hill. Give us the street address and we will tell you which applies.
How quickly can you get to Murarrie?
Generally same day or the next, Saturdays included, and the Gateway makes this an easy suburb for us to reach. Call 1300 545 489 and flag anything urgent. Commercial premises with an active problem should say so, because those frequently come with a deadline attached.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
All general pest treatments carry twelve months, with free re-treatment of any listed pest that reappears in that window. Termite work and rodent baiting fall outside this and are covered on their own terms. Our terms and conditions spell the whole thing out.
