Our Local KNowledge

COMMON PESTS IN ONE MILE

The name is a measurement. One Mile’s eastern boundary, the Bremer River, sits 1.7 kilometres, or one mile, from the centre of Ipswich at the old Toowoomba Road river crossing. Straightforward, and unusual among Queensland suburb names, which mostly commemorate people or borrow from somewhere else entirely. Worth knowing too that One Mile originally included what became Leichhardt, named separately in 1953.

The One Mile bridge, built in 1936, carries an unusual rising sun motif and was renamed the Don Livingstone One Mile Bridge in 2015. Riverside farmland from the late 1800s was partly converted to parkland in 1925, which is why so much of the suburb’s river frontage is public open space rather than housing. Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church opened in 1958, and the school followed in 1967 as the first Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Brisbane opened without full-time religious staff.

The flood story here is more nuanced than most Ipswich suburbs and worth getting right. In January 2011 the Bremer flooded the edges of One Mile and took the Hastings sports ground, but did not reach many houses, because the housing largely sits above the lower ground. One Mile also appears in council’s list for the February and March 2022 event. So this is a suburb with genuine river frontage where the parkland absorbed much of the impact rather than the homes. That is a real and reassuring distinction, and it is why we ask for a street address rather than making assumptions from the suburb name.

Termites

TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN ONE MILE

Termites damage more Australian homes each year than fire, flood and storms combined, and it is not something insurance will pay for. CSIRO’s national termite survey grades this region high hazard. One Mile’s exposure comes from the extensive riverside parkland along its eastern edge as much as from the river itself, because parkland means mature trees, stumps and retained timber sitting close to residential blocks.

We inspect the roof void, the subfloor where present, internal walls, the complete perimeter, fence lines and any timber in the yard, checked with a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing needs opening. On blocks backing the parkland or the river we spend real time on that boundary, because Coptotermes acinaciformis makes its nest low in stumps and tree bases, foraging as far as 50 metres.

The fact that most One Mile houses sat above the 2011 water is good news, but it is not a reason to skip inspection. Elevation protects a house from inundation. It does nothing about a colony working up from ground level through a stump or a fence post. The QBCC’s recommendation is annual inspection and reporting wherever the hazard rating is high, regardless of how a property fared in any particular flood.

What you get

What's Included in a Pest Treatment

A quick lap of the yard with a spray wand is not what we mean by a treatment. We start inside and work through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then head up into the roof void and down into the subfloor where one exists.

Outside covers the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, with webbing and wasp nests removed and dust or bait placed into voids a surface spray cannot get to. Where a property adjoins the riverside parkland we give that boundary specific attention, since it is the route most activity uses to enter the yard.

Most homes are done in 60 to 90 minutes. The certificate is emailed the same day and written to suit a property file where the home is rented, with the next reminder already set.

Frequently Asked Questions

One Mile Pest Control FAQs

The things people ask us most before they book.

How much does pest control cost in One Mile?

House size and inspection findings set the figure, so we look before quoting rather than guessing on the phone. Call 1300 545 489, describe the property, and the number we give is the number you pay. The quote costs nothing. If you are on one of the lower blocks near the river, mention it.

Why is it called One Mile?

Because of the distance. The suburb’s eastern boundary on the Bremer River sits roughly a mile, about 1.7 kilometres, from the centre of Ipswich at the old Toowoomba Road crossing. It is one of the few genuinely literal suburb names in South East Queensland. The 1936 One Mile bridge, with its unusual rising sun motif, was renamed the Don Livingstone One Mile Bridge in 2015.

Did One Mile flood in 2011?

Partly, and the detail is worth having. The Bremer flooded the edges of the suburb and took the Hastings sports ground, but it did not reach many houses, because most of the housing sits above the lower ground. One Mile is also on council’s list of suburbs affected in 2022. So there is genuine river exposure here, but the parkland along the eastern edge absorbed a lot of it. For your specific address, Ipswich City Council’s flood mapping will tell you far more than a suburb-level answer.

How often should I get a termite inspection in One Mile?

Every twelve months, and more often if you back onto the riverside parkland. The QBCC recommends yearly inspection by a licensed pest controller in high hazard areas and CSIRO national termite survey classifies the region as high hazard. Arrange your termite inspection and we will handle the reminders from then on.

My house sat above the 2011 flood. Do I still need an inspection?

Yes, and the two things are less connected than people assume. Sitting above flood level protects you from inundation, which is genuinely worth having. It does nothing at all about a termite colony working up from ground level through a stump, a fence post or a garden bed. Elevation and termite risk are separate questions, and a dry house in a flood suburb is not a low-risk house for termites.

How quickly can you get to One Mile?

Usually same day or next, and we work Saturdays. Ring 1300 545 489 and let us know if it is urgent, whether that is a wasp nest near an entry, noise in the roof at night, or damage you have just found.

What does the 12-month warranty cover?

Twelve months on every general pest treatment, with free re-treatment of any pest named on your certificate that reappears in that period. Termite treatment and rodent baiting operate under a separate quote and warranty. Full particulars are in our terms and conditions.
