Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN OXLEY
Oxley is named after Oxley Creek, which John Oxley surveyed in December 1823 and initially called Canoe Creek before Edmund Lockyer renamed it for him. The Yerongpian and Chepora clans of the Yugara and Yugarabul peoples knew it as Benarrawa. The first land sale here was in 1851, a hotel stood near the creek by 1860 on the Cobb and Co coach route to the Darling Downs, and the brick Oxley Hotel built by 1892 at Oxley and Ipswich Roads is still trading on the same corner. A floating sugar mill called the Walrus operated on the creek in 1869. This is genuinely old ground by Brisbane standards.
Two Queensland Heritage Register entries sit inside the suburb. The Fort at 199 Fort Road was built around 1882 for retired pastoralist Henry William Coxen, to plans by Andrea Stombuco revised by Colonial Architect F. D. G. Stanley, and later served as a Catholic monastery. The Oxley War Memorial at 1218 Oxley Road was built in 1920 and unveiled in February 1921. Industry runs just as deep: William Brittain moved his brickworks to a Douglas Street site in 1899, and clay extraction and brick production continue in Oxley to this day.
The water is the defining feature. The Brisbane River forms the northern boundary and Oxley Creek runs the entire eastern edge. That creek is Brisbane’s longest at 70 kilometres, drains a 260 square kilometre catchment, and is the only sand-based creek in the city. The suburb also takes in part of the 150 hectare Archerfield Wetlands. Flooding is documented and repeated: 1893 halted construction in the lower areas for years, and both 2011 and 2022 inundated properties along Oxley Road, Blunder Road and the Ipswich Motorway.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN OXLEY
Termites damage more Australian homes annually than fire, flood and storms combined, and it is a cost no insurer carries. The CSIRO’s national survey puts the region in its high hazard band, and Oxley stacks several risk factors on top of that: genuinely old housing stock, permanent water on two sides, and repeated flood history that leaves subfloors and wall cavities holding moisture long after the water has gone.
The inspection covers the roof void, subfloor where present, internal walls, the full external perimeter, fence lines, stumps and any yard timber, all assessed with a moisture meter and thermal camera. In a flood-affected home we pay particular attention to the subfloor and to any timber that has been wet and dried more than once, because repeated wetting softens timber and makes it considerably more attractive to Coptotermes acinaciformis, which forages up to 50 metres from its nest.
If your home has been through 2011 or 2022, tell us when you book. Post-flood repairs frequently introduce new timber, replaced flooring and altered ventilation, and the combination of fresh timber and lingering subfloor moisture is a genuine risk window that many owners are not warned about. The QBCC’s recommendation is annual inspection and reporting wherever the hazard rating is high.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
Walking the outside with a wand for ten minutes is not a treatment. We work indoors first, through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then go up into the roof space and down into the subfloor where one exists.
The external pass takes in the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, with wasp nests and webbing taken down and dust or bait pushed into voids no spray reaches. On a lower-lying Oxley property we give the subfloor and stumps proper attention rather than a glance, because that is where flood moisture lingers and where rodents shelter once the water drops.
Most homes run 60 to 90 minutes. You get the certificate by email that same day, with a reminder set for the next service so it does not slip.

Frequently Asked Questions
Oxley Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Oxley?
It depends on the property, its age and what the inspection shows. Call 1300 545 489, describe the home and the problem, and what we quote is what you pay, with no charge for the quote. If your place has been flooded at any point, say so on the call, because it genuinely changes what we need to look at.
Our house flooded in 2011 or 2022. Does that increase our pest risk?
Yes, in two ways that are worth separating. In the short term, displaced rodents move into dry buildings and cockroach activity rises sharply as drains and cavities stay damp. Longer term, the real issue is termites. Timber that has been wet and dried repeatedly is softer and more attractive to a colony, subfloor moisture takes far longer to leave than most owners expect, and flood repairs often introduce new timber into a still-damp structure. If you have been through either event, an inspection is a sensible investment rather than an upsell.
Is Oxley Creek really the longest creek in Brisbane?
It is, at around 70 kilometres, draining a 260 square kilometre catchment, and it is also the only sand-based creek in the city. It forms Oxley’s entire eastern boundary while the Brisbane River runs along the north, so the suburb has significant permanent water on two sides. That is the underlying reason mosquito pressure after rain, rodent movement along the corridors and termite risk are all higher here than in a landlocked suburb a few kilometres away.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Oxley?
Once a year at minimum, and every six to nine months for older or flood-affected homes close to the creek or river. The QBCC recommends yearly inspection by a licensed pest controller in high hazard areas and CSIRO national termite survey scores this region high hazard. Book a termite inspection and we will carry the reminder.
How do I find out if my property is flood-affected?
Brisbane City Council’s FloodWise Property Report is the right tool, and it is free. It gives you a property-specific answer rather than a suburb-level guess, which matters enormously in Oxley because the difference between one street and the next can be significant. We are pest controllers rather than flood consultants, so we will tell you what flooding means for your pest and termite risk, and point you to Council for the mapping itself.
How quickly can you get to Oxley?
Same day or next in most cases, Saturdays included, and the Ipswich Motorway makes this an easy suburb to reach. Ring 1300 545 489 and flag anything urgent, particularly after heavy rain, when rodent call-outs here spike and we try to prioritise them.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
Every general pest treatment is covered for a full twelve months, with free re-treatment of any pest listed on your certificate that reappears within that time. Termites and rodent baiting are a distinct service with distinct cover. Our terms and conditions set out the detail in full.
