Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN PINE MOUNTAIN
John Oxley named this country Pine Ridge on 21 September 1824 for its hoop pine, and it later became Pine Mountain. Loggers worked that hoop pine from the 1850s, and once the timber was cut settlers farmed lucerne, maize, cotton and dairy. The Brisbane Valley branch railway from Ipswich to Lowood opened in 1884 and ran through the district with a station west of the public hall. By 1911 there were about eighty farmers and selectors here, along with a hotel, school, sawmill and Sherlock’s butter factory.
Then it emptied out. Pine Mountain State School operated from around 1864 until 1963, and by the 1961 census the locality was down to 59 residents. Farming had collapsed, the school closed, and what had been a working rural district became almost nothing. It came back on acreage subdivision, reaching 1,559 by 2006 and sitting at 1,695 in 2021. Very few places in South East Queensland have depopulated and repopulated that completely within living memory.
At 38.7 square kilometres this is by a wide margin the largest locality we cover in this valley, more than ten times the size of Barellan Point. It is bounded by the Brisbane River to the north and east, Sandy Creek to the north-west, and the Warrego and Brisbane Valley Highways to the south and west. Pine Mountain itself rises to 233 metres, with Flinton Hill at 105 metres in the north. Hoop pine remains common and there are bush reserves and a nature refuge within the locality. There is no school, no shopping centre and no railway station, since the Brisbane Valley line is long closed.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN PINE MOUNTAIN
Australian homes suffer more termite damage each year than they do from fire, flood and storms combined, and it is uninsurable. The CSIRO’s national termite survey sets this region at high hazard. On a property surrounded by hoop pine, bush reserve and old farm country, with decades of accumulated stumps and fallen timber, that rating understates rather than overstates the situation.
The inspection has to go well beyond the house and on a property this size that takes time. We cover the roof void, subfloor, internal walls and full perimeter with a moisture meter and thermal camera, then work outward through sheds, machinery buildings, tanks, stockyards, fence lines, stacked firewood and the boundary where cleared paddock meets timber. Coptotermes acinaciformis colonises stumps and tree bases and forages out to 50 metres, and on a rural block a very large proportion of your land sits inside that radius of something.
Old farm infrastructure is the specific thing we find activity in here. Timber fence posts, yard rails, disused sheds and the remains of structures from the district’s farming era are all sitting in ground, usually unvisited, often for years at a time. They are frequently where a colony establishes before it gets anywhere near the house. The QBCC’s guidance is a yearly inspection at minimum where the hazard rating is high.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
A quick pass around the homestead does not cover a rural property and we will not sell it as one. Work starts indoors through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then moves up into the roof space and down into the subfloor where one exists.
Outdoors we cover the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, clear webbing and wasp nests, and place dust or bait into voids no surface spray reaches. On a Pine Mountain property that extends to sheds, machinery buildings, tanks, pump housings, yards and stacked timber, because on rural land the outbuildings are almost always where a colony arrives first.
Rural properties take considerably longer than a suburban house and we will tell you honestly on the day roughly how long. The certificate is emailed the same afternoon with your next reminder set.

Frequently Asked Questions
Pine Mountain Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Pine Mountain?
Rural properties are quoted individually because block size and the number of buildings vary enormously out here. Call 1300 545 489, tell us the acreage and what structures are on it, and the quote we give is the price you pay. It costs nothing to get one. Let us know how much of the block is timbered, since that affects the scope more than the house size.
Do you treat sheds, yards and farm buildings?
Yes, and on a Pine Mountain property that is often where the useful findings are. Machinery sheds, disused outbuildings, timber fence posts and old yard rails all sit in ground, generally unvisited for long stretches, and they are typically the first thing a colony establishes in. Inspecting only the house on a block measured in hectares does not tell you much at all.
We have hoop pine and bush on the property. Is that a problem?
It is the reason the place looks the way it does and it is a factor to manage rather than remove. Mature timber, stumps and fallen wood sit well inside termite foraging range of most homes here, and the bush supports rodents, spiders and snakes as permanent habitat rather than occasional visitors. The sensible response is a shorter inspection cycle, keeping ground immediately around the house clear, and being deliberate about where firewood is stacked.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Pine Mountain?
Every twelve months at minimum, and every six to nine months on a heavily timbered block or one with a lot of old farm infrastructure. The QBCC advises an annual inspection and report in high hazard areas and CSIRO national termite survey records this region as high hazard. Book a termite inspection and you will not have to remember the next one.
Did Pine Mountain really almost disappear?
Close to it. This was a working district with around eighty farmers and selectors by 1911, plus a hotel, school, sawmill and butter factory. Farming declined, and the 1961 census counted 59 residents in the whole locality. The school closed in 1963. Acreage subdivision brought it back from there to roughly 1,700 today. It is one of very few places in this region that emptied out and refilled within living memory, and some of the old farm structures from that first era are still standing on people’s blocks.
How quickly can you get to Pine Mountain?
Usually same or next day, and we do Saturdays. It is further out than most of our runs, so if you can give us a little flexibility on timing we will generally get to you faster. Ring 1300 545 489 and say if something is urgent and we will work around it.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
Every general pest treatment carries a full twelve months, and anything named on your certificate that reappears within that time is re-treated at no cost. Termite work and rodent baiting are quoted on their own and warranted on their own. See our terms and conditions for the complete wording.
