Our Local KNowledge

COMMON PESTS IN PINKENBA

The name is Turrubal and it is one of the better documented ones in Brisbane. Pinkenba comes from Binkinba, meaning a place of tortoises, or a good hunting place for land tortoise depending on which rendering you read. It was in common use locally well before it became official with the opening of the railway station in 1897. Bulwer Island alongside it is named for Lord Edward Bulwer-Lytton, Secretary of State for the Colonies when Queensland separated from New South Wales in 1859.

Industry arrived early and never left. Meatworks from 1892, a wharf in 1898, the country’s first full-scale sewerage treatment plant at Luggage Point in 1923, a Qantas flying boat base in the 1930s, embarkation points for two wars, and the Bulwer Island refinery from 1965, which stopped refining in 2015 and now runs as an import terminal. More recently a large construction and demolition recycling plant and the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal, which opened to its first ship in June 2022 and is in Pinkenba despite being a Port of Brisbane asset. Pinkenba State School ran from 1875 until it closed on low enrolment around 2010.

For our work the deciding feature is the water. This is low-lying tidal land on the north bank at the river mouth, fringed with grey mangroves and former saltmarsh now managed by engineered drainage. That produces sustained mosquito pressure that inland suburbs simply do not have, and permanently damp ground that makes a property worth a subterranean colony approaching. Pinkenba is also on the Brisbane City Council list of suburbs affected in January 2011. We could not verify its February 2022 status, because council reported a suburb count for 2022 without publishing the names.

Termites

TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN PINKENBA

Termites cost Australian property owners more each year than fire, flood and storm damage together, and insurance does not touch it. The CSIRO national termite survey places this region in the high hazard category. Tidal alluvial ground at a river mouth holds moisture more consistently than almost any other soil type we work on, and moisture is the first thing that makes a property attractive.

The inspection takes in the roof void, subfloor where there is one, internal walls, the full perimeter, fence lines and any yard timber, read with a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing needs cutting into. On mangrove-edge blocks we extend the boundary work, since Coptotermes acinaciformis nests below stumps and tree bases and forages up to 50 metres, and a tidal margin supplies both the damp and the timber.

Older Pinkenba houses are the ones worth booking soonest. Many predate the modern barrier standards entirely, sit on stumps rather than slab, and have had decades of additions, each of which is a potential bridge over whatever protection exists. If your place took water in 2011, mention it, because timber that has wet and dried repeatedly softens and becomes more attractive to a colony. QBCC guidance is a yearly inspection at minimum in high hazard areas.

What you get

What's Included in a Pest Treatment

For a house, the work starts indoors through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then goes up into the roof void and down into the subfloor where one exists. Ten minutes around the outside is not a treatment and we will not present it as one.

Outside covers the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, with webbing and wasp nests cleared and dust or bait placed into voids a spray cannot reach. On a block near the mangroves we spend real time on that boundary and on anything holding water, because mosquito pressure here is driven by breeding sites close to the house far more than by the tidal flats themselves.

Most houses run 60 to 90 minutes and the certificate is emailed the same day with the next reminder set. Industrial sites are scoped separately, with a documented service report, a site plan and mapped rodent stations, written to suit whatever standard you report against.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pinkenba Pest Control FAQs

The things people ask us most before they book.

How much does pest control cost in Pinkenba?

House size and what the inspection turns up set it, and industrial sites are scoped on the property. Call 1300 545 489, tell us whether it is a home or a site and roughly how close you are to the mangroves, and what we quote is what you pay. The quote is free.

Why are the mosquitoes so bad here?

Because of what the suburb is made of. Tidal flats, mangrove fringe and former saltmarsh on low-lying ground at the river mouth all breed saltmarsh mosquitoes, and they fly further than people assume. What we can actually change is the pressure right around your house, which usually comes down to standing water in gutters, pot bases, tarps, tanks and boat covers, plus treatment of the harbourage where they rest through the day. That makes a real difference even though the flats themselves are beyond anyone’s reach.

What does the name Pinkenba mean?

It comes from the Turrubal word Binkinba, meaning a place of tortoises, or a good hunting place for land tortoise. It was in local use long before it became the official name when the railway station opened in 1897. It is one of the more reliably documented Aboriginal place names in Brisbane, which is not always the case.

Is the cruise terminal in Pinkenba or the Port of Brisbane?

Pinkenba, at Luggage Point. It is a very common mix-up, because the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal was built and is operated by Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd, so people reasonably assume it sits in the Port of Brisbane locality. It does not. The two are neighbours and the boundary runs between them.

Did Pinkenba flood?

Yes. Pinkenba is on the list of flood-affected suburbs Brisbane City Council released in January 2011. For February 2022, council reported that 177 suburbs were affected but did not publish the names, so we cannot tell you either way on that one without guessing. For your address specifically, council’s Flood Awareness Map will give you a proper answer.

How often should I get a termite inspection in Pinkenba?

Every twelve months, and sooner if you are on an older stumped house or near the mangrove edge. The QBCC recommends annual inspection by a licensed pest controller in high hazard areas and CSIRO’s national survey rates this region high hazard. Book a termite inspection and we will handle the reminders.

What does the 12-month warranty cover?

A full twelve months on general pest treatments, with free re-treatment of any pest named on your certificate that returns within the period. Termite jobs and rodent baiting are quoted and warranted separately, and commercial sites usually run on a service cycle instead. The full terms sit in our terms and conditions.
