Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS AT THE PORT OF BRISBANE
The whole suburb is manufactured ground. Fisherman Island was reclaimed from the former Fisherman Islands group at the mouth of the Brisbane River, the port opened there on 15 November 1980, and reclamation has continued behind a seawall ever since. Twenty four square kilometres of locality boundary takes in a great deal of water and future expansion land, so the built footprint is a good deal smaller than the map suggests.
What operates here drives the pest profile more directly than anywhere else we work. Nine container berths across three stevedores, a coal terminal, a grain, cottonseed and sugar terminal, a cement and clinker plant, a woodchip terminal, motor vehicle processing, an intermodal rail hub and a spread of logistics estates leased in sites of a few hectares each. Grain and cottonseed handling means stored product pests. Container yards and empty parks mean rodents with unlimited harbourage. Vehicle processing and warehousing mean a lot of covered, rarely disturbed floor space.
Two things here are genuinely different from ordinary commercial work. The first is that imported freight arrives from everywhere, so the pest that turns up in a container is not always one that lives locally, and anything unusual is a biosecurity matter rather than ours to treat quietly. The second is the constructed shorebird roost built in 2005, described as the largest site built specifically for migratory shorebirds on the east coast, alongside Ramsar-listed Moreton Bay. Rodent baiting near habitat like that needs placements that non-target birds cannot reach, and we will tell you where we are putting things and why.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS AT THE PORT OF BRISBANE
Australian buildings lose more to termites in a year than to fire, flood and storm combined, and none of it is insured. This region is graded high hazard in CSIRO’s national termite survey. Reclaimed land is not immune, and imported timber dunnage, pallets and crating give a colony material to work with that would not otherwise be there.
On a port or logistics site the inspection covers the slab edge and expansion joints, service penetrations, office fit-outs and partition framing, amenities blocks, stored timber and dunnage, fence lines and any landscaping planted against a building. Coptotermes acinaciformis nests low in stumps and tree bases and forages up to 50 metres, so retained trees and verge planting inside that radius get checked properly.
The practical risk on sites like these is stored timber rather than the building. Pallets, crating and dunnage sit in stacks for months, in contact with the ground, out of the way and largely unlooked at. That is a far more likely first sign than anything in the structure itself. QBCC guidance is annual inspection as a minimum where the hazard rating is high.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
Port sites get scoped rather than quoted off a list. We walk the site with you, agree the scope, and work to your access, induction and gate requirements. If you need us inside restricted areas we will sort the inductions before the first service rather than on the day.
The work covers internal voids and wall junctions, amenities, bin and waste areas, loading docks and door tracks, plant rooms, the external perimeter and the yard. Rodent stations are placed to a plan and mapped, with placements chosen so non-target wildlife cannot reach them. Where stored product pests are the concern, monitoring goes in alongside treatment, because a trend line tells you more than a single visit.
Reporting is documented and issued the same day, with a site plan and station locations. If anything we find looks like it came in on freight rather than out of the yard, we say so in the report, because that is a different problem with a different answer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Port of Brisbane Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost at the Port of Brisbane?
It is scoped on the site. Floor area, what you store or handle, how much yard there is and how often you need us all move the number. Ring 1300 545 489, describe the operation, and we will attend and quote properly. Quoting costs nothing, and we would rather look than guess on a site this varied.
Do you handle grain and stored product pests?
Yes. Grain, cottonseed and sugar handling brings a different set of insects to the ones a warehouse normally deals with, and they are managed by monitoring and hygiene as much as by treatment. Trapping and inspection over time tells you whether a population is building, where it is coming in and whether what you are doing is working. A single spray tells you almost nothing.
What if we find something that came off a ship?
Then it is a biosecurity matter first and a pest control matter second. Exotic pests arriving on imported cargo are reportable, and the right move is to contain and report rather than treat and move on. We will tell you straight if something looks out of place rather than quietly spraying it. Getting that wrong is a much bigger problem than a pest.
Can you work around our access and induction requirements?
Yes, and we expect to. Port sites have gate procedures, restricted zones, inductions and shift patterns, and none of that is unusual to us. Tell us what is needed when you book and we will have it done before the first visit rather than turning up and being turned around.
Will baiting affect the shorebirds?
Not if it is done properly, and it is a fair thing to ask. The port has a constructed shorebird roost and sits alongside Ramsar-listed Moreton Bay, so placements near habitat use tamper-resistant stations that non-target species cannot access, positioned away from foraging and roosting areas. We will show you on the site plan where everything is and why it is there.
Does anyone live at the Port of Brisbane?
No. The Bureau of Statistics publishes no census profile for the locality at all, on the basis that it had no people or a very low population. Any population or demographic figure you see for Port of Brisbane on a property website is drawn from a wider area, because there is no suburb-level data to draw on.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
Twelve months on general pest treatments, with free re-treatment of anything on the certificate that comes back within that time. Scheduled commercial programmes work on a service cycle with reporting instead, which suits most sites here better. Termite work and rodent programmes are quoted on their own. It is all set out in our terms and conditions.
