Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN RANSOME
Ransome is one of the quietest places in Brisbane. It covers 4.8 square kilometres and holds 429 people at a density of about 89 per square kilometre, which for a suburb thirteen or so kilometres from the CBD is remarkable. Residential settlement is really just two separate clusters on Rickertt Road and Molle Road, and most of the locality is bushland or reserve. It was officially named and bounded in 1975 after Charles Horace Ransome, who ran a sawmill here supplying firewood to Brisbane and to Queensland Railways, and who died in 1948.
The geography is what makes the work here what it is. The suburb is bounded to the north by Moreton Bay and to the east by Tingalpa Creek, sitting directly opposite Thorneside across the water. The coastal land is undeveloped and held as Ransome Reserve, with walking tracks and limited public bay access, and the Cleveland railway line runs through undeveloped bushland. The train does not stop. There is no station, no school, no shops and no significant commercial development, and residents use Gumdale and the surrounding suburbs for everything.
One thing we will not claim: market gardens. It gets said about Ransome fairly often and we could not find it documented in any authoritative source, so we are leaving it out. What is documented and more useful anyway is that this is overwhelmingly undeveloped bushland and reserve with two small road-based residential pockets in it. That combination, large treed blocks embedded in retained bush beside a tidal creek and bay foreshore, produces a specific and quite demanding pest profile.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN RANSOME
Australian homes suffer more termite damage annually than they do from fire, flood and storms combined, and insurance covers none of it. CSIRO national termite survey places this region in the high hazard category. A large block embedded in retained bushland, beside a tidal creek, with mature timber close to the house, sits at the demanding end of that range.
Charles Ransome ran a sawmill here supplying firewood to Brisbane and to Queensland Railways, which is fitting for a suburb where stored and stacked timber is still the most common finding. We check the roof void, subfloor, internal walls and full perimeter with a moisture meter and thermal camera, then work the fence line, any woodpile, and the transition where mown ground gives way to reserve.
The tidal creek adds moisture on top of the bushland. Ground that stays damp is ground that a colony will work toward, and the combination of permanent habitat and permanent moisture is why we would suggest a shorter inspection interval here than on a standard suburban lot. The QBCC recommends no more than a year between licensed inspections in high hazard areas.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
Ransome properties sit in pockets of two or three houses surrounded by reserve, which means the treatment has to account for land you do not own and cannot treat. We start inside through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then work the roof space and subfloor.
The external work is where a Ransome job differs from a normal acreage visit. Because most of the surrounding land is Ransome Reserve rather than private property, the treated boundary is effectively your fence line, and everything beyond it stays untreated permanently. That makes the boundary itself the whole defence, so we work it hard: perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, garden beds, webbing and wasp nests down, dust or bait into voids no spray reaches, and a close look at anything stored or stacked against that fence.
Allow longer than a suburban job, and longer again if access to the rear boundary is overgrown. Certificate by email the same afternoon with your reminder set.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ransome Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Ransome?
Block size and the number of outbuildings drive it rather than floor area. Phone 1300 545 489, tell us how much land there is and what structures sit on it, and the quote we give is the price you pay. It costs nothing to get one. Mention how heavily treed the block is, since on a Ransome property that changes the scope more than the house size does.
Is there a station in Ransome?
No, which is one of the odder things about the place. The Cleveland railway line runs straight through Ransome, through undeveloped bushland, without stopping. There is also no school, no shops and no commercial development of any kind, and residents use Gumdale and the surrounding suburbs for everything. It is a suburb the train passes through, which is a fair summary of how quiet it is.
We're on a bushland block. What should we expect?
The specific thing about Ransome is that you are not managing your own bushland, you are living beside somebody else’s. Ransome Reserve is public land held undeveloped, so the habitat next door is permanent and nobody is going to thin it, clear it or manage it for your benefit. Practically that means constant rather than seasonal pressure along the fence line, and a tidal creek on the eastern side adding mosquitoes on top. It is entirely liveable, it just means the boundary is doing all the work.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Ransome?
Every twelve months at minimum, and every six to nine months on a heavily treed block. The QBCC recommends a licensed pest controller inspect and report on a property every year, or more often in high hazard areas and CSIRO’s national survey assigns this region a high hazard rating. Bushland plus a tidal creek is a strong case for the shorter interval. Get a termite inspection booked and we will track the date from there.
Do you treat sheds and outbuildings?
Yes, included as standard. On a Ransome property the woodpile is usually the find. This was a firewood-supplying district historically and it still behaves like one, with stacked timber sitting against sheds and fences on most blocks here. Stacked wood on ground beside a building is a food source and a bridge at the same time, and moving it off the ground and away from the wall is frequently the single most useful thing an owner can do.
Do you actually service Ransome? It's a small place.
We do, and we say so plainly because a suburb of 429 people gets overlooked by a lot of operators. Ransome sits between Gumdale, Wakerley and Thorneside, all of which we cover regularly, so it is a normal part of the run rather than a special trip. Give us a call and we will book you in like anywhere else.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
Twelve months of cover on every general pest treatment, with free re-treatment of anything listed on your certificate that returns during that year. Termite treatment and rodent baiting sit on their own quote and their own warranty. The wording in full is on our terms and conditions page.
