Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN SILKSTONE
Silkstone is named after the village of Silkstone near Penistone in South Yorkshire, a coal village that gave its name to the famous Silkstone seam. An Ipswich suburb on the western edge of Queensland’s most important nineteenth century coalfield, named by homesick Yorkshire miners after the coal village they had left, is about as direct a piece of local history as you will find. It sits roughly three kilometres east of central Ipswich, adjoining Newtown, and grew as settlement spread along the railway line through Newtown and Booval.
The timeline is steady rather than dramatic: a postal receiving office in 1889, a Primitive Methodist church in 1890, the Silkstone Baptist Church in 1912 with extensions in 1928 and 1929, and the Newtown to Silkstone school opening in 1915 as a two-storey weatherboard building with ten classrooms. Bremer State High School was built here in 1959 and relocated in 2011. Most of the housing dates from the early 1900s through the interwar period, typically on large blocks, with Blackstone Road between Cothill and Margaret Streets holding some of the better period architecture.
Silkstone State School is on the Queensland Heritage Register, listed in March 2019. Its Block A, completed in 1915, is described as the most substantial surviving example of the suburban timber school building type introduced in 1914, high-set with coved ceilings, ventilation grilles and windows placed for single-source lighting. The Minister of the day called it one of the most beautiful timber schools in Queensland. It has been operating continuously since 1915. Bundamba Creek marks the eastern boundary of the suburb and flooded at nearby Blackstone during the February 2022 event.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN SILKSTONE
More Australian homes are damaged by termites each year than by fire, flood and storms combined, and insurance covers none of it. This region is rated high hazard in the CSIRO’s national termite survey grades this region high hazard. Silkstone’s housing is the issue: predominantly early 1900s to interwar timber, on large blocks, in a suburb where a great many homes have never had a modern termite management system installed at all because they were built decades before such things existed.
On these houses the subfloor is where the job is genuinely done. We spend proper time under the house examining stumps, bearers, joists, ant caps and anything stored underneath, along with the roof void, internal walls, the full perimeter and yard timber, using a moisture meter and thermal camera. Coptotermes acinaciformis nests in stumps and tree bases and forages up to 50 metres, and a large old block frequently has an old stump or two still in the ground somewhere.
The upside of old timber housing is that it can be read. A high-set home with an accessible subfloor will show you what is happening far more readily than a slab-on-ground house, where activity can move inside a wall cavity for a long time before anything is visible. The QBCC advises no longer than twelve months between inspections in high hazard areas, and on a hundred-year-old Silkstone home a yearly look is the difference between a treatment and a rebuild.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
Ten minutes around the outside with a spray wand is not a treatment. We start indoors through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then move up into the roof void and down into the subfloor, which on most Silkstone homes is a significant part of the visit.
Outside covers the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, with webbing and wasp nests taken down and dust or bait pushed into voids no spray will reach. Under a high-set house we treat the stumps and the ground beneath as well, since on this style of home that is generally where activity begins.
Most homes run 60 to 90 minutes, longer where the subfloor is large or hard to access. The certificate is emailed the same day, written to suit a property file where the house is tenanted, with the next reminder set.

Frequently Asked Questions
Silkstone Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Silkstone?
House size and style set it, and an older high-set home with a full subfloor is a longer job than a small cottage. Ring 1300 545 489, tell us what sort of house it is and roughly how old, and the quote we give is the price you pay, free either way. With housing this age it is worth asking about a termite inspection at the same time.
Why is Silkstone named after a place in Yorkshire?
Because that is where the miners came from. Silkstone near Penistone in South Yorkshire is a coal village that gave its name to the Silkstone seam, and this suburb sits on the western edge of Queensland’s most significant nineteenth century coalfield. The naming is a straightforward piece of homesickness from people who worked coal in both places. The neighbouring Blackstone and Bundamba area was heavily mined from the 1890s onward.
Is there old mining underneath Silkstone?
We would not state that as fact. The heavily documented underground workings in this area are in the neighbouring Blackstone and Bundamba belt, and we could not verify documented workings beneath Silkstone itself. Ipswich City Council maps mining influence areas in its planning scheme, and that is the authoritative source for a specific property. It is a planning question rather than a pest control one, and we would rather point you to Council than guess.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Silkstone?
Every twelve months, and we would push that fairly hard given the age of the housing here. The QBCC calls for annual inspection and reporting in areas carrying a high hazard rating and CSIRO national termite survey classifies the region as high hazard. On a timber home over a century old, an annual inspection is the single most cost-effective thing you can do. Book a termite inspection and we will keep the reminder.
My house has never had a termite barrier. Is that unusual here?
Not at all, and it is worth understanding rather than worrying about. Most of Silkstone’s housing was built well before termite management systems were standard practice, so plenty of homes here have never had one. That does not mean the house is doomed, it means detection is doing the work that a barrier would otherwise do. Regular inspection is what keeps an unprotected old timber home safe, and it works, provided somebody actually does it.
How quickly can you get to Silkstone?
Usually same day or next, Saturdays included. Phone 1300 545 489 and flag anything urgent, whether that is a wasp nest at an entry, noise in the roof, or something you have found in the subfloor, and we will bring it forward.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
A full twelve months on every general pest treatment, with free re-treatment of any listed pest that reappears in that time. Termite treatment and rodent baiting sit on their own quote and their own warranty. It is written out in full in our terms and conditions.
