Our Local KNowledge

COMMON PESTS IN STOCKLEIGH

Stockleigh was settled on a specific day: 1 September 1863, when George Hawkins and Will Elworthy claimed land here. The name came from Elworthy’s birthplace in Devon. Mary Ann Hawkins, Elworthy’s sister, provided midwifery to the district, George held religious services in their slab hut, and the family built a larger house called Sunnyside in 1885. They also planted willows from St Helena along the Logan River, which is the kind of detail that survives because somebody thought it worth writing down.

The industry here was dairying, not coal. Local farmers invested in the Kingston Butter Factory and carted milk and cream to Kingston across the Maclean Bridge, and the area stayed primarily dairy through the early twentieth century. Schooling ran from John Garsden’s home in 1872, became Stockleigh Provisional School in 1873, was rebuilt in 1877 and again in 1899, became Stockleigh State School in 1909 and closed in 1935. There has been no school in the locality since, and residents use Logan Village and Jimboomba.

What that history left is the thing that matters to us: 16.7 square kilometres of large acreage blocks, 371 dwellings, and a century and a half of farm structures, fencing, yards and sheds accumulating on them. Old dairy country carries more legacy timber than country that was always residential. Stock yards, superseded fencing, bails and feed structures either remain or leave their stumps in the ground, and stumps in the ground are where colonies start.

Termites

TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN STOCKLEIGH

Termites cost Australian homeowners more each year than fire, flood and storm damage together, and none of it is insurable. CSIRO’s national survey of termite hazard places this region high. Acreage in the Logan River catchment sits at the upper end, because the property itself supplies the timber and the ground holds the moisture.

On a block out here the inspection goes well past the building line. We read the roof void, subfloor, internal walls and full perimeter with a moisture meter and thermal camera, then work outward through sheds, garages, carports, tank stands, stock yards, fence lines, stacked firewood and any remnant farm structure. Coptotermes acinaciformis nests in stumps and tree bases and feeds up to 50 metres out, which on sixteen square kilometres of acreage puts a large share of most blocks inside range.

The Stockleigh-specific point is the sheds. With 2.8 vehicles per dwelling, 3.3 people per household and 57 percent of homes mortgaged, this is a suburb of working families with vehicles, trailers, boats and equipment, and that means substantial shedding on almost every property. A shed is warmer, damper and far less disturbed than the house, it usually holds timber and stored material against its walls, and nobody inspects it. It is consistently where we find activity first out here. The QBCC recommends annual inspection by a licensed pest controller in high hazard areas.

What you get

What's Included in a Pest Treatment

Acreage takes longer than a suburban house and we scope it that way from the start. The work begins indoors through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then continues into the roof space and the subfloor where one exists.

Outside runs to the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, clearing webbing and wasp nests and placing dust or bait into voids that spraying will not reach. On a Stockleigh block that means the sheds get done properly rather than glanced at, along with garages, carports, tank stands, stored timber and the treeline, since on a property this size the outbuildings are where the job really is.

You get a straight estimate on the day rather than a standard time, and the certificate is emailed that afternoon with your next reminder already set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stockleigh Pest Control FAQs

The things people ask us most before they book.

How much does pest control cost in Stockleigh?

Acreage is quoted on the property because block size and the number of outbuildings matter more than the floor area of the house. Ring 1300 545 489, tell us roughly how much land there is and how many sheds and structures are on it, and what we quote is what you pay. Quoting is free.

Do you do the sheds as well as the house?

Yes, and out here they are often the more important part. A shed is warmer, damper and far less disturbed than a house, it usually has timber and stored material stacked against the walls, and it is almost never inspected. On old dairy country there is also frequently a second structure, a set of yards or the stumps of something long gone, and those are the places activity turns up before anything shows in the house.

Why does Stockleigh have so many sheds?

Because of what the census shows about who lives here. Household size averages 3.3, there are 2.8 vehicles per dwelling, 57 percent of homes are mortgaged and every dwelling is detached on a large block. That is working families with vehicles, trailers, boats and gear, on land that has room for it. Add a century of dairy farming structures on the same ground and you get a locality where the buildings other than the house are a real part of the job.

Are there schools in Stockleigh?

Not now. Stockleigh State School closed in 1935, having started as classes in John Garsden’s home in 1872 and become a provisional school in 1873. Residents use Logan Village and Jimboomba, and it is worth being careful not to attribute those facilities to Stockleigh itself, which is a common slip in listings for the area.

Did Stockleigh flood?

Stockleigh is in the Logan River catchment with the river to the west, so low-lying land here is exposed in principle. We could not find any Logan City Council published list naming Stockleigh as affected in either 2011 or 2022, so we will not claim one exists. Council publishes property-level flood mapping, and that is the thing to check for your own block rather than any suburb-wide statement.

How often should I get a termite inspection in Stockleigh?

Every twelve months as a minimum, and more often on a heavily treed block or one with a lot of legacy farm structure on it. QBCC guidance is annual inspection and reporting where the hazard rating is high and CSIRO’s national termite survey rates this region high hazard. Book a termite inspection and remembering the next one becomes our problem.

What does the 12-month warranty cover?

A full twelve months on every general pest treatment, with anything named on your certificate re-treated free if it comes back in that period. Termite work and rodent baiting are quoted on their own and warranted on their own. Everything is laid out in our terms and conditions.
