Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN SWANBANK
Swanbank was Logan Lagoon and Josey’s Lagoon before early settler James Foote renamed it after his wife’s birthplace in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The name that everybody actually knows it by is the power station, and the thing most people get wrong about it is the fuel. The coal units are long gone: Swanbank A closed in August 2005 and Swanbank B between April 2010 and May 2012. What operates today is Swanbank E, a 385 megawatt gas-fired plant commissioned in 2002 and run by CleanCo. Calling Swanbank a coal power station is about two decades out of date.
The harder piece of local history is Box Flat. The mine operated on Swanbank Road from 1969 and on 31 July 1972 an underground gas and coal dust explosion killed seventeen men, eight of them members of the rescue team. Survival was judged impossible, the mine was sealed, and the bodies were never recovered and remain underground. A memorial stands at the site. It is the single most significant thing that has happened in this locality and it deserves to be stated plainly rather than skipped over.
What drives our work now is the waste and resource recovery cluster. Composting, landfill, transfer stations, tyre recycling and construction waste processing all operate in the Swanbank and New Chum estates, and the Queensland Government runs a standing odour programme over both with thirteen monitoring stations, four of them industrial stations at Swanbank. Government data shows odour reports in 2023 and 2024 concentrated to the south around Swanbank rather than New Chum, and a public health inquiry released in November 2025 found the odours highly offensive and made eight accepted recommendations. For pest control the relevant point is simpler: organic waste processing at this scale is the strongest fly and rodent driver in the Ipswich region, and every site in and around it feels it.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN SWANBANK
Termites take more from Australian buildings each year than fire, flood and storm combined, with no insurance behind it. CSIRO’s national survey of termite hazard rates this region high. Industrial buildings are inspected far less often than houses, which is the real reason damage in them tends to be advanced before anyone finds it, not because the risk is lower.
On a Swanbank site we cover the slab edge and expansion joints, service penetrations, office fit-outs and partition framing, amenities and crib rooms, workshop structures, stored timber, fence lines and any vegetation against a building. Coptotermes acinaciformis nests in stumps and tree bases and forages up to 50 metres, and the grazing and native vegetation in the south west of the locality sits inside that range of several sites.
The local complication is that a lot of ground here has been worked, filled or rehabilitated at some point, so fill depth and buried timber are not always predictable from the surface. Old stumps and buried debris under a slab are exactly the sort of thing that supports a colony out of sight for years. QBCC guidance is no more than twelve months between licensed inspections where the hazard is high, and that applies to a workshop as much as a house.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
Every site here gets walked before it gets quoted. We look at what you process, where it sits, how waste moves through the site and where the pressure is actually coming from, then agree a scope and a service interval that matches it.
Treatment covers internal voids and wall junctions, amenities and crib rooms, bin and waste areas, workshops, plant and equipment surrounds, the external perimeter and the yard. On organic waste and composting sites, fly management is the main event and it is handled with treatment, monitoring and practical advice on stockpile and moisture management, because product alone will not hold a site where the source is on the same lot. Rodent stations are placed to a plan and mapped.
Reporting is documented and issued the same day with a site plan and station locations, written so it can be handed to an auditor or a regulator without translation. Given the regulatory attention on this locality, that matters more here than in most places.

Frequently Asked Questions
Swanbank Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Swanbank?
It is scoped on the site, because a composting operation and a workshop are completely different jobs. Call 1300 545 489, tell us what the site does and how big it is, and we will attend and quote. Quoting is free, and on a site with any organic waste component we would much rather look than guess.
Is the Swanbank power station coal-fired?
Not any more. The coal units closed years ago, Swanbank A in 2005 and Swanbank B between 2010 and 2012. The operating unit is Swanbank E, a 385 megawatt gas-fired plant commissioned in 2002. It is also still running, despite a 2021 accounting write-down that gets quoted as though it meant closure. It did not.
We have a fly problem. Can you fix it?
We can reduce it substantially, and we will be honest about the limits. If the breeding source is on your own site, in stockpiles, tanks or waste holding, then treatment plus changes to how that material is managed will get you most of the way. If the source is a neighbouring operation, treatment manages your side of the fence but will not eliminate it, and anyone promising otherwise in this particular locality is overselling. We will tell you which situation you are in after we have looked.
Is the odour issue a pest control matter?
No, they are separate things, though they share a cause. Odour is regulated under the Queensland Government’s Swanbank and New Chum programme, with thirteen air monitoring stations and a public health inquiry released in November 2025. That is a matter for the department and the operators. What overlaps is that the organic waste processing generating the odour is also what generates the fly and rodent pressure, so a site improving one usually improves the other.
Does Swanbank have a mine subsidence problem?
Not a documented one. Swanbank has real coal mining history, but mining history and a declared subsidence area are different things. The only Ipswich locality the Queensland Government documents as a subsidence remediation area is Collingwood Park, where two decommissioned underground mines run beneath part of the suburb. Ipswich City Council separately maps historical mine workings as a planning layer, which is also not the same thing. We would rather say that clearly than repeat something we cannot source.
Did Swanbank flood?
We could not find any record of it. Swanbank is not named in Ipswich City Council’s 2022 recovery planning, and council publishes flood maps for 1974, 2011 and 2022 rather than a list of affected suburbs. The locality sits on elevated former mining land rather than the Bremer floodplain, which makes it unsurprising, but not recorded as affected is not the same as unaffected and we will not claim otherwise.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
General pest treatments carry twelve months with free re-treatment of anything named on the certificate that returns. Scheduled commercial programmes run on a service cycle with reporting instead, which is what most sites here need. Termite jobs and rodent programmes are priced on their own. See our terms and conditions.
