Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN THORNESIDE
Thorneside is named after Thorne’s siding, for William Thorne, who bought and subdivided land into small farm and seaside blocks in 1913. The Cleveland railway line dates from 1889 but growth stayed slow, and the line was actually closed back to Lota between 1960 and 1987. The suburb went from 63 residents in 1921 to around 2,200 by 1987 when rail service resumed, and it has grown steadily since. That stop-start rail history explains a lot about why Thorneside developed differently from the suburbs either side of it.
Geographically it covers 3.2 square kilometres bounded to the north-east by Waterloo Bay, part of Moreton Bay, and to the west by Tingalpa Creek. Mooroondu Point is the northern tip where the creek meets the bay, and a large wetland sits near the creek mouth, west of Thorneside Road. Tidal creek on one side and bay foreshore on the other is an unusual position for a suburb this small, and it is the main thing shaping pest pressure here.
The hazard picture is well documented by Redland City. The primary flood source is Tingalpa Creek, affecting properties along the Esplanade, Railway Parade, Ferry Road and Thorneside Road. Queens Esplanade foreshore and the Thorneside Wetlands carry storm tide exposure, Leslie Harrison Dam spillway releases can worsen lower-creek flooding, and the wastewater treatment plant is subject to tidal inundation. Bushfire risk is described as very limited. There is no state school within the boundary, and the only school is the South East Brisbane Steiner School.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN THORNESIDE
Termites damage more Australian homes each year than fire, flood and storms combined, with no insurance behind the repair. CSIRO’s national termite survey grades this region high hazard. Thorneside’s exposure is about moisture: a tidal creek on one boundary, bay foreshore on another and a wetland near the creek mouth all keep ground moisture higher than an inland suburb.
The inspection runs through the roof void, the subfloor where one exists, internal walls, the complete perimeter, fence lines and yard timber, read with a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing has to be cut into. In a townhouse or unit complex we extend to the shared roof space and party walls, because a colony inside an attached block does not confine itself to the lot that called us, and Thorneside has a great deal more attached housing than its neighbours. Coptotermes acinaciformis forages up to 50 metres from its nest.
The shared-building point deserves emphasis here more than almost anywhere else in this batch. If you own a townhouse and activity is found, treating your lot alone while the problem sits next door is money half spent. We will tell you plainly when a job properly belongs with the body corporate rather than the individual owner. The QBCC’s recommendation is annual inspection and reporting wherever the hazard rating is high.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
A quick lap of the outside with a spray wand is not a treatment. We begin indoors, working the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then go up into the roof void and down into the subfloor where there is one.
Outside covers the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, with webbing and wasp nests taken down and dust or bait placed into voids a surface spray cannot reach. On properties toward the creek or foreshore we give drainage, ground levels and anywhere water sits after a tide or storm real attention. In a complex we coordinate access across the lots that need it rather than treating one in isolation.
Most jobs run 60 to 90 minutes. The certificate is emailed the same day, suited to a property file where the home is rented, with the next reminder set.

Frequently Asked Questions
Thorneside Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Thorneside?
It depends whether it is a house, a townhouse or a unit, and what the inspection turns up. Call 1300 545 489, describe the property, and what we quote is what you pay, free either way. If you are in an attached complex, mention it, because that can change how the job is best arranged and occasionally who should be arranging it.
I own a townhouse. Does the body corporate need to be involved?
Sometimes, and we will say so rather than quietly doing half the job. Treatment inside your own lot is yours to arrange. Anything involving the shared roof space, party walls, common property or a problem clearly moving between units usually needs to go through the body corporate to be worth doing. Thorneside has more attached housing than the suburbs around it, so this comes up regularly here.
We're near Tingalpa Creek or the foreshore. What should we expect?
More mosquito and midge activity, particularly around tides and after rain, and more rodent movement along the creek corridor. Biting midges breed in tidal mud and are largely unaffected by residential treatment, so the honest answer is that we can reduce harbourage on your property and treat the building and yard properly, but nobody can treat an estuary. Screening, timing outdoor activity away from dawn and dusk, and clearing standing water on your own block does more than anything sold as a spray.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Thorneside?
Every twelve months, and worth tightening for properties on the lower ground toward the creek. The QBCC recommends yearly inspection by a licensed pest controller in high hazard areas and CSIRO national termite survey classifies the region as high hazard. Book a termite inspection and we will hold the reminder for you.
Which streets are most flood-exposed?
Redland City’s disaster planning identifies Tingalpa Creek as the primary flood source, affecting properties along the Esplanade, Railway Parade, Ferry Road and Thorneside Road, with storm tide exposure along Queens Esplanade foreshore and the wetlands. Leslie Harrison Dam spillway releases can worsen lower-creek flooding. For your specific address, Redland City Council is the authoritative source. From our side, what matters is that persistent moisture raises both rodent pressure and termite interest in a property.
How quickly can you get to Thorneside?
Usually same day or the next, Saturdays included. Ring 1300 545 489 and say if anything is urgent, whether that is a wasp nest near an entry, noise in the roof, or activity you have just noticed, and it moves up the run.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
Twelve months on every general pest treatment, with free re-treatment of any pest listed on your certificate that reappears in that time. Termite jobs and rodent programs are separately quoted and separately warranted. Full particulars are in our terms and conditions.
