Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN WAKERLEY
Wakerley takes its name from J.W. Wakerley, an early landholder near the corner of New Cleveland and Ingleston Roads. It was part of Gumdale until it was named as a locality in its own right in 1975, and for two decades after that almost nothing happened. The population was 440 in 1976 and still only 715 by 1996. Then it moved very fast: 1,516 in 2001, 3,908 in 2006, 7,804 in 2011. By 2021 it had settled at 8,718 and stopped.
That growth curve is the most useful thing to know about this suburb, and it drives most of what we find here. A suburb built out almost entirely between the late 1990s and about 2011 has housing stock of remarkably uniform age and construction. Slab-on-ground, similar materials, similar landscaping, and crucially, termite management systems installed within a fairly narrow window. Those systems have a working life, and across Wakerley a great many of them are now reaching or past the end of it at roughly the same time.
Geographically Wakerley sits on the headwater tributaries of Lota Creek, which distinguishes it from Carindale, Carina, Cannon Hill and Belmont, all of which drain to Bulimba Creek. It is also a suburb with very little of its own. There is no railway station, no shopping centre of any scale and no government school inside the boundary. Residents cross into Gumdale, Tingalpa or Manly West for most things, which is worth knowing when you are trying to work out which suburb your property is actually in.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN WAKERLEY
Termites cost Australian homeowners more each year than fire, flood and storm damage together, and it is not an insurable loss. This region falls in the high hazard band of the CSIRO national termite survey places this region in the high hazard category. The specific issue in Wakerley is timing. When a whole suburb is built inside a fifteen-year window, its original termite barriers also reach end of life inside a fifteen-year window, and a lot of owners assume the protection installed at construction is permanent. It is not, and it never was.
The inspection runs through the roof void, the subfloor where one exists, internal walls, the complete external perimeter, fence lines and yard timber, checked with a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing gets cut into. On a newer slab-on-ground house we pay particular attention to the slab edge, weep holes and any landscaping, paving or garden bed that has been built up against the wall since handover, because that is the most common way a functioning barrier gets bridged.
We will also tell you honestly what your builder’s original system does and does not cover at this point, including whether it was a chemical treatment with a defined lifespan or a physical barrier that needs the perimeter kept visible. The QBCC recommends yearly inspection by a licensed pest controller in high hazard areas regardless of a home’s age, and a twenty-year-old house with an expired barrier is not meaningfully safer than a forty-year-old one.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
Spraying the outside walls for ten minutes is not a treatment, whoever is selling it. We begin inside and work through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then head up into the roof void and down into the subfloor if there is one.
The external work covers the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, with webbing and wasp nests taken down and dust or bait placed into voids surface spray never reaches. On Wakerley houses we also look at anything added since the home was built, retaining, decking, paving and raised garden beds, since post-handover landscaping is where barrier problems usually begin.
Expect 60 to 90 minutes for a typical home. You get the certificate by email the same day and we set a reminder for the next service so it does not drift.

Frequently Asked Questions
Wakerley Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Wakerley?
It depends on the size of the house and what we find once we look. Call 1300 545 489, run us through the property, and what we quote is what you pay, at no charge for the quote. Most Wakerley homes are of a similar vintage, so it is worth asking about a termite inspection at the same time, for reasons the next answer covers.
My house is only about twenty years old. Do I really need a termite inspection?
Yes, and Wakerley is close to a textbook case for why. A termite management system installed at construction is a barrier with a working life, not a permanent guarantee. Most of this suburb went up between the late 1990s and about 2011, which means a very large number of homes here hit the end of that working life within a few years of each other. Plenty of owners are relying on protection that quietly stopped protecting some time ago.
Does landscaping affect my termite barrier?
It is the most common way a good barrier gets defeated. Raised garden beds, new paving, added soil or mulch built up against the wall can bridge a perimeter barrier or hide the inspection zone that a physical system relies on being visible. It is nobody’s fault, it just happens gradually over years of improving the yard. We check for it on every Wakerley inspection and will show you exactly where the problem is if there is one.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Wakerley?
Annually. The QBCC treats an annual inspection as the baseline in high hazard areas and CSIRO’s national survey assigns this region a high hazard rating. Book a termite inspection and we will keep the reminder so you are not tracking it yourself.
Which creek is Wakerley on?
Wakerley sits on the headwater tributaries of Lota Creek, not Bulimba Creek. That is a genuine difference from Carindale, Carina and Belmont nearby, which all drain into the Bulimba system. Brisbane City Council has a separate Lota Creek flood study, and Council’s FloodWise Property Report is the right tool for a property-specific answer rather than anything general we could offer.
How quickly can you get to Wakerley?
Same day or next in most cases, Saturdays included. Ring 1300 545 489 and let us know if anything is urgent, a wasp nest near an entry, scratching in the roof, or termite damage you have just uncovered, and it moves up the schedule.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
Every general pest treatment is covered for a full year, so if a pest named on your certificate comes back within that time we re-treat at no cost. Termite work and rodent baiting run on separate quotes and separate warranties. It is all documented in our terms and conditions.
