Our Local KNowledge

COMMON PESTS IN WHITE ROCK

The suburb is named for the white sandstone outcrop on the ridge. It is a sacred site, known culturally as a women’s area, and Ipswich City Council records the name as Nugum, also given as Boogun. Climbing the outcrop and its southern ridge is prohibited, because it is registered cultural heritage under the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003. That is worth knowing before anyone new to the suburb goes looking for the view.

Most of the locality is the White Rock and Spring Mountain Conservation Estate, more than 2,500 hectares managed by Ipswich City Council through its Enviroplan programme. Council records over 600 plant species and 150 fauna species there, three endangered vegetation types, five threatened plant and three threatened animal species including the brush-tailed rock wallaby, and the headwaters of seven major waterways. The main entry at Paperbark Flats is actually in Redbank Plains, and there is a separate and much smaller state conservation park of the same name, so the two get confused regularly.

For our work the combination is unusual and quite demanding. New slab-on-ground housing going up directly against thousands of hectares of retained native bushland, on ridge country that straddles the divide between the Bremer and Brisbane River catchments. New construction disturbs ground and gives colonies a reason to move. A permanent bushland boundary supplies the colonies. Those two things arriving together is precisely the situation where a first-year owner assumes a new house means no termite risk, and that assumption is the one that costs money here.

Termites

TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN WHITE ROCK

Australian homes lose more to termites annually than to fire, flood and storms combined, and it is not insured. CSIRO’s national termite survey scores this region high hazard. A brand new house on the edge of 2,500 hectares of bush is not a low risk property. It is a well-protected property, which is a different thing, and the protection has conditions attached.

On a new home the critical points are the slab edge, weep holes and the inspection zone the physical barrier depends on staying visible, alongside the roof void, internal walls, the full perimeter and any yard timber, read with a moisture meter and thermal camera. Coptotermes acinaciformis nests in stumps and the base of trees and forages up to 50 metres, and on a block backing the conservation estate that radius reaches well into retained bushland.

Here is the part that catches people. A builder’s termite management system is a barrier with a working life and maintenance conditions, not a permanent seal, and several types stop functioning as designed once the inspection zone is covered. The things that cover it are paving, retaining walls, decking, raised garden beds and turf brought up against the slab, which is exactly what goes in during the first two years after handover. If you are landscaping, get the inspection before you build over the edge, not after.

What you get

What's Included in a Pest Treatment

A ten minute lap with a spray wand is not a treatment. We start inside through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then go up into the roof void, which on a new house is usually the cleanest and easiest read we will get all year.

Outside covers the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, clearing webbing and wasp nests and placing dust or bait into voids a spray cannot reach. On a White Rock block we pay particular attention to two things: anything added since handover that might have bridged the barrier, and the bush boundary, because that is where activity enters the yard before it ever reaches the house.

Most homes are done in 60 to 90 minutes. The certificate is emailed the same day, and on a new build it is worth keeping with your handover documents, because a continuous inspection record is what keeps a builder’s system meaningful over time. We set the next reminder before leaving.

Frequently Asked Questions

White Rock Pest Control FAQs

The things people ask us most before they book.

How much does pest control cost in White Rock?

House size and what we find set it, and most homes here are a similar size and age so it is usually straightforward. Phone 1300 545 489, describe the place, and the number we quote is the number you pay, free to get. If you are backing onto the conservation estate, say so, because that changes where we spend the time.

My house is brand new. Do I really need a termite inspection?

Yes, and in this suburb more than most. A builder’s termite management system is a barrier with a defined working life and maintenance conditions, not a guarantee. Several types rely on an inspection zone staying visible and stop doing their job once paving, decking or garden beds cover it. Add a permanent bushland boundary within foraging range and you have a property that is well protected today and can quietly stop being protected within a couple of years. New means lower risk, not no risk.

We back onto the conservation estate. Is that a problem?

It is the reason you bought the block and it is also the thing that changes the job. Two and a half thousand hectares of retained native bushland means mature trees, stumps and fallen timber permanently within foraging range, plus more spider, ant and rodent movement along that boundary than an interior block sees. None of it is a defect. It just means the bush edge gets worked properly rather than sprayed past.

Can I climb White Rock?

No. The outcrop and its southern ridge are closed to climbing because the site is registered Aboriginal cultural heritage under the 2003 Act, and it is known culturally as a women’s area. The estate has a good range of walking trails, from a 200 metre walk up to a 19 kilometre round trip, open daily 6am to 6pm, with no dogs allowed. The rock itself is off limits and worth respecting.

Is there really nobody living in White Rock?

That was true at the 2021 census, which returned no information because the area had no people or a very low population. It is no longer true. Around 2,300 home sites are planned and construction has been underway across the south west, so the 2026 census will show a real population for the first time. Anyone quoting the 2021 result as current is describing a suburb that has changed underneath them.

How often should I get a termite inspection in White Rock?

Every twelve months, and every six to nine if you back directly onto bushland. The QBCC calls for annual inspection and reporting in high hazard areas and CSIRO’s national termite survey sets this region at high hazard. Book a termite inspection and we will keep track of when the next one falls due.

What does the 12-month warranty cover?

A full twelve months on general pest treatments, with anything named on your certificate re-treated free if it returns in that time. Termite work and rodent baiting are quoted and warranted on their own. Everything is set out in our terms and conditions.
