Because your house is sitting in the humidity they need. Silverfish require relative humidity in the roughly 75 to 95 per cent range, and a Lota subfloor or roof void supplies that for months at a stretch given mangrove and mudflat ground on the doorstep. They feed on starches and glues: paper, bookbindings, photos, wallpaper paste, carpet, stored linen and clothing, which is why wardrobes and storage boxes are usually where you first notice them. We can cut the pressure around the house meaningfully, and we will be straight about the ceiling. Saltmarsh mosquitoes breed in brackish pools and marshes flooded by the highest tides, and biting midges breed in intertidal mud and mangrove areas, with Queensland Health treating anything inside 1.5 kilometres of that habitat as very high risk. Brisbane City Council treats more than 20,000 hectares of coastal breeding habitat with larvicides. Nobody can treat Lota Creek or the bay. What we can do is remove the breeding sites on your property and treat the vegetation they rest in.

Every twelve months at a minimum, six to nine if you back the creek or the wetland. The QBCC recommends a licensed pest controller inspect and report annually, or more often in high hazard areas. Lota’s housing is overwhelmingly post-1954, so the original barriers are long finished, and persistent subfloor moisture on tidal ground is a documented conducive condition. Mangrove and mudflat habitat is a permanent corridor with water, cover and food along it, so the population outside your fence is never going to zero. Rodents move along the creek line, huntsman and web-building spiders come in through the subfloor and eaves, and mosquitoes and midges breed in the intertidal mud. What changes the outcome is proofing the house, keeping vegetation off the roofline, getting stored timber out from under the floor, and running bait in lockable tamper-resistant stations rather than loose.
