Our Local KNowledge

COMMON PESTS IN TINGALPA

Tingalpa is the largest of the bayside suburbs by area at about 8.9 square kilometres, holding roughly 8,461 people, and around 18 per cent of dwellings are townhouses or semi-detached. It is inland with no bay frontage, but it has plenty of water: Bulimba Creek forms the western boundary and runs through Minnippi Parklands, ninety hectares of reed-lined lagoons and open space shared with Carina and Cannon Hill.

That water puts Tingalpa in a small club. It is one of only two suburbs on this side of Brisbane that council names by name in its aerial mosquito treatment notices, appearing repeatedly alongside Hemmant and Bulimba Creek. Reed-lined lagoons and a creek corridor through residential streets is exactly the freshwater habitat that program targets.

The housing is overwhelmingly post-war. The population was 21 in 1881 and 1,376 by 1954, reaching around 8,539 by 2011, and the 1949 post office directory still lists eight poultry farms. So most homes here went up well after the war, though there is real heritage in the middle of it: Christ Church at 1341 Wynnum Road dates from 1868, was rebuilt in 1886, and is weatherboard with a high-pitched corrugated iron roof, on the Queensland Heritage Register since 1998. One thing worth clearing up, because locals get asked it: Tingalpa Creek does not actually run through Tingalpa. It is about five kilometres to the east.

Termites

TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN TINGALPA

Termites cause more damage to Australian homes each year than fire, flood and storms combined, and standard insurance covers none of it. The high hazard band of the CSIRO national survey covers Brisbane, where 44.7 per cent of surveyed homes showed activity outside the building and 26 per cent inside, adjusted to a standard thirty-year-old house. Tingalpa is largely post-war, so most homes here are past the working life of their original chemical barrier and a good share predate the durable notice requirement entirely.

The inspection runs about 90 minutes. Roof void, subfloor where there is one, internal walls, the full external perimeter, fence lines, retaining walls, stumps and yard timber, read with a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing has to be opened up. On properties along the Bulimba Creek corridor we spend longer on the boundary and the drainage, because retained creek vegetation carries mature timber and a colony forages up to fifty metres from its nest.

On the later slab housing the two faults we find most are landscaping that has crept up over the slab edge across decades of garden work, and weep holes rendered, paved or mulched over. Both bridge the barrier and neither shows from above. If termites are present you get options with honest costs and timeframes: a chemical barrier, a bait and monitoring system, or the two together.

What you get

What's Included in a Pest Treatment

The ten-minute outside spray is not what this is. Indoors first, covering kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, before the roof void and floor cavity. In a townhouse we also treat the roof space above the ceiling line and the wall either side of the party wall.

Outside covers the building perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, with the slab edge checked specifically. Because council treats mosquito habitat here from the air, the yard walk focuses on the water council cannot reach: blocked gutters, pot plant bases, bird baths, old tyres, a poorly sealed tank and the low corner that holds water for a week after rain.

On a creek-corridor property we also look at the back boundary, since stacked timber, mulch and clippings against the fence give everything coming off the corridor a staging point. Wasp nests and webbing come off, and voids beyond spray reach take dust or bait. Most homes run 60 to 90 minutes with the certificate emailed the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tingalpa Pest Control FAQs

The things people ask us most before they book.

How much does pest control cost in Tingalpa?

It depends on the size of the home and whether it is detached or attached, and the price is fixed before we book. Nearly a fifth of dwellings here are townhouses or semi-detached, and those are smaller jobs than a full detached house, so one advertised number would be wrong for a lot of this suburb. Call 1300 545 489 with the property type and the symptoms, and that number holds. Free either way. Set against it: CSIRO places Brisbane in a high termite risk zone and no policy covers termite damage.

Why is Tingalpa named in council's mosquito helicopter notices?

Because the habitat here genuinely warrants it, and Tingalpa is one of only two suburbs on this side of the city that appears by name. Bulimba Creek forms the western boundary and runs through Minnippi Parklands, ninety hectares carrying reed-lined lagoons, which is prime freshwater breeding habitat. Council monitors around 2,500 known freshwater breeding sites citywide and treats with Bti and methoprene, running aerial applications after significant rainfall. The upside is that the large habitat is being managed. What is left is the water on your own block, and on most properties that is more of the problem than people expect.

Does Tingalpa Creek run through Tingalpa?

No, and it is a genuinely common mix-up worth clearing up because it changes what you should worry about. Tingalpa Creek rises out at Mount Cotton and Burbank and reaches Moreton Bay at Thorneside, roughly five kilometres east of the suburb that shares its name. The waterway that actually matters to your house is Bulimba Creek, which forms the western boundary and sits in a 122 square kilometre catchment running from Kuraby and Runcorn through to Hemmant and Murarrie. If you are near the creek, it is Bulimba you are dealing with, and that is the one in council’s treatment notices.

How often should I get a termite inspection in Tingalpa?

Every twelve months at a minimum, six to nine if you back onto the Bulimba Creek corridor or Minnippi Parklands. The QBCC recommends a licensed pest controller inspect and report on your property annually, or more often in high hazard areas. Tingalpa is largely post-war so the original barriers are finished, and creek-corridor vegetation carries mature timber inside foraging range of the house. Coptotermes acinaciformis occurs throughout Queensland and nests in tree bases and stumps. Book a termite inspection.

We back onto the parklands. What comes across the fence?

A steady stream, because ninety hectares of reed-lined lagoon and creek corridor is a permanent habitat corridor with water, cover and food along the whole length. Practically that means mosquitoes from the lagoons, rodents along the creek line, huntsman and web-building spiders, and wasps nesting in eaves and sheds. On the termite side, the retained vegetation holds mature timber within foraging distance of the building. None of that is a reason to be unhappy about backing onto parkland. It is a reason to inspect on a shorter cycle and keep timber, mulch and clippings off the fence line rather than stacked against it.

How quickly can you get to Tingalpa?

Same day or next, Saturdays included. Tingalpa sits on the Gateway between Brisbane and the bayside suburbs, so it is one of the easier suburbs on the run to reach and we are through most weeks. Ring 1300 545 489 and you get the genuine next available appointment rather than a place on a list. Anything urgent gets prioritised if you say so on the call: rats in the roof, a wasp nest over the back deck, or termite damage you have just uncovered. After heavy rain the mosquito calls climb here because of the lagoons, so ring earlier in the week if the water has been up.

What is covered by the 12-month warranty?

Twelve months on every general pest treatment, and if the pests we treated for come back inside that window we return and re-treat at no cost. Cover follows the pests named on your certificate, so a standard job means ants, cockroaches, spiders and silverfish. Termite work, rodent baiting and bed bugs are quoted and warranted separately because they run to their own cycles. Mosquitoes are the honest exception: with reed lagoons and a creek corridor through the suburb, and council treating that habitat from the air, the breeding sites sit outside your boundary and we will not pretend to warrant them. The terms and conditions set out the rest.
