Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN SHAILER PARK
Shailer Park is the most owner-occupied suburb in this part of Logan and it shows in the housing. Almost 90 per cent of dwellings are detached houses, only 3 per cent are semi-detached, and more than half the households are paying off a mortgage while under a fifth rent. That is the opposite profile to the suburbs either side of it. People here have usually been in the same house a long time, which means they notice when something changes and they call earlier, and it also means a lot of original barriers and original drainage.
Kimberley Forest Park on Chay Street is the local factor that matters most. It runs to more than fifty hectares of forest with a rainforest gully and rock pools fed by permanent springs, and it holds swamp and red-necked wallabies plus birds council describes as uncommon elsewhere in Logan. Permanent water and mature timber that close to housing means steady pressure from spiders, rodents and termites along the boundary.
The other water feature is engineered. The Shailer Pioneer Park constructed wetland on Shailer Road was built between September and December 2014 to treat stormwater from the Slacks Creek catchment, and surveys have since confirmed at least five native frog species in it. Shailer Park is a catchment suburb rather than a river frontage one, so the water here is creek and wetland rather than tidal.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN SHAILER PARK
Termites do more damage to Australian homes each year than fire, flood and storms combined, and standard insurance covers none of it. CSIRO rates this region a high termite hazard area. Shailer Park’s housing followed the Kimberley Park estate being marketed from 1973, with the high school opening in 1980, the state school in 1982 and Kimberley Park State School in 1985. So the bulk of the stock is forty to fifty years old, which puts every original chemical barrier decades past its working life.
Expect us on site for around 90 minutes. Roof void, subfloor where one exists, internal walls, the full external perimeter, fence lines, retaining walls, stumps and yard timber, all read with a moisture meter and thermal camera so nothing gets cut open. On a larger Shailer Park block we also check the shed and any retaining walls, because on this size of lot the outbuildings are frequently the first thing colonised.
Where your back fence is Kimberley Forest Park, the boundary gets most of the attention. Fifty hectares of forest with a permanently spring-fed gully in it is exactly the habitat Coptotermes acinaciformis nests in, and a colony works up to 50 metres out from the nest. If we find activity you get real options with real costs: chemical barrier, bait and monitoring system, or both together.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
A quick lap of the outside with a wand is not what this is. The technician starts indoors through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then works the roof void and the floor cavity where the problem usually began long before it reached a kitchen bench.
Outside runs the building perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, plus the shed and any retaining walls on a bigger block. On a forty-year-old home the finished ground level has usually crept up over the slab edge or the ant caps after decades of mulching and rebuilt garden beds, so we check that specifically and tell you which strip to pull back. It costs you nothing to fix and it is often the whole problem.
Webbing and wasp nests come down on the day, and voids a spray will never reach get dust or bait instead. Most homes run 60 to 90 minutes, longer with outbuildings. Certificate emailed the same day with a reminder before the next service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Shailer Park Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Shailer Park?
The size of the home and how many buildings are in scope decide it, and the price is fixed before we book. Shailer Park is almost entirely detached houses on decent blocks, often with a shed, so the quote depends on whether you want the outbuildings covered and whether a termite inspection runs alongside the general treatment. Ring 1300 545 489, describe the property and what you are seeing, and you will get a real figure on that call at no charge. CSIRO puts this region in a high termite risk zone, and no policy covers the damage. Our 365 Pest Protection Plans spread it over the year.
My house is from the early eighties. Is the termite barrier still working?
Almost certainly not. Shailer Park’s housing followed the Kimberley Park estate being marketed from 1973, and the schools opened in 1980, 1982 and 1985, so most homes here are forty to fifty years old. Chemical soil barriers have a working life measured in years, not decades, and the long-lived organochlorine soil treatments used up to the mid 1990s were withdrawn. Look for the durable notice in your meter box, though on a house this age there may not be one, because the requirement came later. Either way nobody currently knows the state of the building. Start with an inspection.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Shailer Park?
Yearly as a floor, six to nine months if you adjoin Kimberley Forest Park. The QBCC recommends annual inspection and reporting by a licensed pest controller, or more often in high hazard areas. The forest park is over fifty hectares with a permanently spring-fed rainforest gully in it, which is prime nesting habitat, and a colony forages up to 50 metres from the nest. Combine that with housing in its fifth decade and the shorter interval is the sensible call. Book a termite inspection.
Do you treat the shed and outbuildings too?
Yes, and on a Shailer Park block we would encourage it. Sheds and pump housings are timber-rich, rarely disturbed and usually sitting straight on the ground with no barrier under them, so they get colonised well before the house and then supply it quietly. Rodents live out there too, because that is where the feed, fuel, birdseed and pet food are stored. When we quote, count the buildings honestly rather than leaving the old shed off to trim the number, because that is the one we get called back to. Detail on the residential page.
There is a wetland at the end of the street. Is that why we get mosquitoes?
Partly, and it is worth understanding what it actually is. The Shailer Pioneer Park wetland on Shailer Road was built between September and December 2014 to treat stormwater from the Slacks Creek catchment, and it now supports at least five native frog species, which is a sign of a functioning system rather than a stagnant one. Constructed treatment wetlands are designed to move water rather than hold it still. In our experience the mosquitoes people notice at home are breeding much closer than that: blocked gutters, pot plant bases, bird baths, a poorly sealed tank, the low corner of the yard. Those we can deal with. Logan City Council runs the public land program.
How quickly can you get to Shailer Park?
Same day or next, Saturdays included. Shailer Park sits on the highway beside the Hyperdome, so it is a straightforward run and we are through here most weeks. Ring 1300 545 489 and you get the real next available appointment instead of a callback promise. Anything urgent gets prioritised if you flag it: rats in the roof, a wasp nest over the back deck, or mud trails you have just found on a retaining wall or a fence post. If you need a specific window around work or a school run, say so when you book and we will fit it rather than giving you a vague half-day.
What is covered by the 12-month warranty?
Twelve months on every general pest treatment. If what we treated for comes back inside that window we return and re-treat at no cost, without an argument. Read the scope on your certificate though, because on a block with outbuildings the warranty covers the buildings listed there. House only means house only, so if the shed was left off the job it is not covered. What is covered is what your certificate names: ants, cockroaches, spiders and silverfish on a standard treatment. Termite work and rodent baiting programs are quoted and warranted separately, since they run to their own cycles. Our terms and conditions spell it out in full.
