Our Local KNowledge
COMMON PESTS IN TANAH MERAH
Tanah Merah has one of the more unusual naming stories in this part of Logan. Jim and Mave McBride relocated from Malaya in 1952 and named their new property after their former Malaysian holding, tanah merah meaning red earth in Malay. The name was officially adopted in 1971, and when the land was later subdivided, a real estate staff member who had lived in Indonesia gave several streets Malay-derived names still in use today, including Tingi Avenue, Goenoeng Drive and Pintu Drive. Growth then plateaued after a mid-2000s estate west of Drews Road filled in, and the population has sat around 4,700 to 4,800 since.
The suburb sits at the junction of the Logan River and Slacks Creek, with the river bordering it to the north, which brings the usual riverside mix of higher ground moisture and more mosquito activity after rain. Tansey Park fronts the river directly and includes a council-managed boat ramp, while Hanlon Street Park and Tahan Crescent Park serve the residential streets further back.
The genuinely rare feature here is at Murray’s Road, home to the largest known population globally of Austromyrtus gonoclada, a native shrub with fewer than 300 known plants left anywhere in the world. It is not something that affects pest control directly, but it says something about how much intact native vegetation still sits within this suburb’s boundary, which matters for anything living in or moving through it.
Termites
TERMITE INSPECTIONS IN TANAH MERAH
Across Australia, termites cause more property damage annually than fire, flood and storms combined, none of it covered by a standard home and contents policy. The CSIRO national termite survey rates this region high hazard. Tanah Merah’s river frontage and its pocket of genuinely intact native vegetation around Murray’s Road both bring more mature timber and moisture into range than a fully built-out inland suburb.
Coverage runs from the roof void through the subfloor where present, internal walls, the full external perimeter, fence lines and yard timber, all checked with a moisture meter and thermal camera. Coptotermes acinaciformis forages up to 50 metres from its nest, and on a riverside property or one near remnant bush that range can easily reach the house.
Most of Tanah Merah’s housing dates from a growth spurt in the mid-2000s, which means a lot of properties are now approaching the point where an original termite management system needs review rather than blind trust. The QBCC recommends annual inspections as a minimum in high hazard areas.
What you get
What's Included in a Pest Treatment
A real treatment is not just an outdoor spray. It starts inside, through the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, wardrobes and skirting boards, then moves up into the roof void and down into the subfloor where one exists.
Outside covers the perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, weep holes, fence lines and garden beds, with webbing and wasp nests taken down and dust or bait pushed into voids no spray will reach. For a property near the river or the remnant bush around Murray’s Road we extend the boundary check, since that is where activity typically enters the yard.
Expect 60 to 90 minutes for most homes. The certificate goes out by email same day, and we log a reminder for your next visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Tanah Merah Pest Control FAQs
The things people ask us most before they book.
How much does pest control cost in Tanah Merah?
It depends on the property, particularly whether you are near the river or set back in the estate. Ring 1300 545 489, describe your home, and what we quote is what you pay, free either way. Worth asking about a termite check given this region’s high termite hazard rating.
Why do some Tanah Merah streets have unusual names like Tingi Avenue or Goenoeng Drive?
They come from the suburb’s own naming history. Tanah Merah means red earth in Malay, named by a family who had relocated from Malaya in 1952, and when the land was subdivided a staff member who had lived in Indonesia gave several streets Malay-derived names that are still in use today. It is unrelated to pest pressure, but it is one of the more distinctive local facts residents ask us about.
How often should I get a termite inspection in Tanah Merah?
Every 12 months at a minimum, and more often if you back onto the river or the remnant bush near Murray’s Road. The QBCC recommends annual inspections in high hazard areas, and this region is rated high hazard by CSIRO’s national survey. Book a termite inspection and we will hold your reminder.
We live near the river. What should we expect?
More mosquito activity after rain, more spiders and rodents moving along the bank, and a higher termite risk from mature riverside trees than a block further inland. It is standard for river-frontage properties and just means the inspection and treatment focus more attention on that boundary.
Is the Logan Hyperdome in Tanah Merah?
It sits close to the suburb’s northern boundary and is often associated with Tanah Merah in casual conversation, but its formal address and adjoining-suburb attribution generally sit with Loganholme and Shailer Park. We service all three, so tell us your street address and we will confirm exactly which suburb page applies.
How quickly can you get to Tanah Merah?
Same day or the next in most cases, Saturdays included. Ring 1300 545 489 and flag anything urgent, a wasp nest, scratching in the roof, or termite damage just found, and it moves up the run.
What does the 12-month warranty cover?
Twelve months of cover applies to every general treatment, and a reappearance of anything on your certificate within that window is treated again for free. Termites and rodent baiting sit outside this warranty and are quoted and covered separately. Full wording is in our terms and conditions.
